This Small Renovated Spanish Apartment Has Brilliant, Unusual Space-Dividing Ideas
“I was searching for an apartment with the help of a friend who happens to be a real estate agent. She knows me very well and did thorough research before showing me this first and only apartment,” begins Maite Córcoles Castell, an event director. “It was love at first sight, without a doubt!”

Located in an “ancient building” (built in the 1900s), the apartment has lots of light and, according to Maite, “brings a nostalgic charm from bygone days while enjoying a coffee on the balcony. The neighborhood has a sense of timeless quality, where to savor each moment. I could instantly envision myself living there with a complete renovation!”
While it had a lot of pros, the small space would need a complete renovation. “I had a very clear idea of leaving the ceiling exposed because we knew the 1900 building had a ‘Catalan vault,’ which is a unique feature from here, and I wanted to give it the prominence it deserves and gain height with it,” Maite writes. “Knocking down walls to achieve the feeling of a spacious, open apartment, making the most of the [538 square feet] and letting in as much light as possible.”
Before moving in, Maite describes the home’s vibe as feeling like it had “no soul.” After the renovation, the small studio apartment now feels like a bright, mid-century modern apartment — almost like a mix of Los Angeles and Barcelona vibes, according to Maite.
“I studied in LA and go back every year at least twice to spend time with my friends. It is my home away from home. I wanted to achieve this laidback, sunshine, hipster energy from there mixed with the Mediterranean Barcelona calm vibes,” Maite continues. “The apartment is functional, but cozy, not cluttered, modern, and elegant too.”
