Name: Thomas Finney
Location: Fort Greene — Brooklyn, NY
Size: 400 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting
When Thomas moved into his studio three years ago, functionality and style were his primary concerns. "This is the first place I've actually invested in. Before, I just had IKEA everything." Despite its proximity to a grade school playground (literally across the street) and shop-lined Brooklyn streets, thanks to Thomas' signature style, the space captures the coziness of a log cabin.
Rich reds and mahogany tones reflect his fashion and interior design sensibilities. Though small, the space is well-tailored to his needs; this small studio apartment is even where Thomas runs his custom menswear business.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Cozy / sophisticated / masculine
Inspiration: Color, wood tones and grain, and texture.
Favorite Element: Secretary desk
Biggest Challenge: Organizing a functional small space to live in and use as my office for my custom men's clothing business
What Friends Say: "I love your apartment!"
Biggest Embarrassment: My bathroom could use a renovation…
Proudest DIY: I am proud of the Kokedama moss ball plants hanging in my windows — I made them using moss and twine.
Biggest Indulgence: I love the antique bamboo umbrella and clothing rack near the front door… It came from Belgium and the shipping fee was very indulgent.
Best Advice: I have found when designing a small space that a variety of seating options is very important. The more seating you can offer with different angles and heights, the more functional the space will feel.
Dream Sources: I'm a big fan of 1st dibs, the online antiques dealer. I have purchased a few pieces from the site, but love to use it for inspiration.
