The holidays are over and you’ve probably already tucked away your decorations for next year. But one TikTok user decorated her fireplace in such a way that it simply makes sense to keep her Christmas decoration up all year round.

TikTok user @prettyinthepines showed how she created a cityscape in her filled-in apartment fireplace using books, wooden houses from Target, and a string of LED lights.

Though the stockings and evergreen boughs make the scene scream “Christmas,” this mini city skyline works in any season and with any aesthetic (and can even be done in real fireplaces, too, if you’re not planning on using it).

As @prettyinthepines shows, you first start with stacking your collection of books in your fireplace to create different heights. Depending on the depth of your fireplace, you can create multiple different height levels, but as @prettyinthepines shows, having only one stack of books in the back works great.

In the caption of her video, @prettyinthepines said that she purchased the wooden houses she uses from the Target dollar section last year. Sadly, Target no longer has their wood houses in stock, but Etsy seller forCRAFT sells a set of 12 wooden buildings that would be perfect for your DIY cityscape.

Decorate your cityscape with any accessories you have on hand. @prettyinthepines used toy taxis, but you can get creative with figurines, faux snow, bottle brush trees, and whatever else you have on hand.

Finally, string some LED twinkle lights in and out of your cityscape, and you’ve got yourself an adorable decoration that makes great use of your unused fireplace — and it also creates great mood lighting, too.

Swap out the accessories as the seasons change and you’ve come up with a great way to keep your fireplace decor relevant for the rest of the year.
