You’d never guess by this rental’s chic, classic style, but Sarah purchased 95 percent of her furniture off of Craigslist. The only things she bought for full price (in other words, from a store) were her bed, headboard, couch, and front console table. Everything else has been the result of successful scavenger hunts!
Sarah’s a Washington D.C. suburb native who recently moved into the heart of city, the Georgetown neighborhood. A freelance writer, she also runs a blog called “D.C. to a T“, where she chats about the five T’s: Tastes, Texts, Tips & Tricks, Textiles, and Treats.
Sarah’s style is a mix of classic and quirky. And she’s obsessed with the set of campaign dressers she purchased off of Craigslist this past winter; she worked with someone local who gave the big dresser a fresh coat of paint, making it a great piece to have in the living room.
Sarah maintains a clean, uncluttered apartment even though she loves to collect items and always finds bargains. Between coffee shop hunting, finding new books, patterns, and bargain shopping — she also just finished her master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Busy gal!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Classic but eclectic. I like a mix of vintage and quirky.
Inspiration: Interior design blogs (love Burlap and Lace and all of her DIYs), as well as stores such as Lulu and Georgia, Society Social, and Furbish. Plus, I’m always on Pinterest adding to my décor board!
Favorite Element: I love the view out my window (adorable Georgetown townhouses) and all of the natural light in my apartment.
Biggest Challenge: Fitting all of my favorite pieces into a relatively small space! I keep coming across tons of great furniture and art finds. I want my place to look cute and complete, but I definitely don’t want it to look cluttered. I have a few pieces currently sitting in my parents’ house because I couldn’t fit them in this apartment — oops!
What Friends Say: “This place looks like it’s right out of Pinterest!” And honestly, that’s the greatest compliment, in my opinion!
Proudest DIY: My bamboo dresser across from my bed which is spray-painted with a blue gloss. I have to give my mom credit for this one, because she did an excellent job reviving the piece, which I found on Craigslist. I’ve received a ton of compliments on it, and we were able to make it look classic without spending much money at all.
Biggest Indulgence: My biggest indulgences were generally practical items. My mattress was expensive but is the most comfortable thing ever. It’s like sleeping on a cloud!
Best Advice: Scour Craigslist. There are gems on that site, trust me! It just takes some patience, and once you find something you like, you have to move quickly!
Dream Sources: I’d love to have a piece of furniture from Society Social in my apartment. I love all of their fun patterns and their classic chinoiserie pieces. One day!

(Disclaimer: I got most of my furniture items on Craigslist, but luckily I was able to source many (though not all) of the same products online. However, I didn’t necessarily purchase things off of the sites linked here — I often found better deals.)
