Though Sadatu and her husband Kareem moved back to the U.S. a few weeks ago, they spent the last three years living in Mexico City for his job. “Mexico City will forever be an important place for us. This is the first home we shared together and where we spent our newlywed years!” And what a first shared home this is. High ceilings and tons of light from floor-to-ceiling windows are what immediately attracted them to this space. And the neighborhood the apartment is located in—La Condesa—is one of the best in the city according to the couple. “It has several beautiful tree-lined boulevards, amazing restaurants and bars, lovely parks, and an abundance of colorful, historic buildings. September’s earthquake had a devastating impact on the neighborhood but it was incredible to witness the resilience of our neighbors and the city as whole in the days, weeks, and months following the earthquake.”

Sadatu’s background is in real estate development, but she started an interior styling business while living in Mexico City, skills that were on display in this colorful, textured space. An earthy, nature-inspired color palette was bolstered by all of the patterns from antiques and art. It’s a space where Sadatu worked from as an entrepreneur, but it’s also a space she and her husband enjoyed relaxing in, often with friends.

“One of our favorite things to do is to host and entertain! We hosted Friendsgiving two years in a row, which was amazing. Most of our friends in Mexico City had never had a full Thanksgiving feast! The city has become a big tourist destination particularly over the past few years so we hosted many friends and family. It’s really important to me that our guests feel at home in our space so I always make sure to take care of little details like spraying bedding with rose water, placing a water carafe on the nightstand, making sure the bathroom is well-equipped with toiletries, and having fresh flowers around the house, of course!”

Our Style: Global eclectic with an emphasis on patterns, vintage and comfort!

Inspiration: Antique and artisan markets in Mexico City.

Favorite Element: The “plant bar” as a friend called it. We couldn’t bring our plants back to the U.S. with us of course, but our dear friends are taking good care of them. We also got to plant one of the larger ones right outside the building so it feels like a piece of us will always be there!

Biggest Challenge: The apartment definitely has some quirks. For example, the dishwasher is not in the kitchen. It’s around the corner in the laundry room. I “overcame” this “challenge” by making it my husband’s duty to load the dishwasher.

Proudest DIY: The nightstands in the guest room. Super easy project—just a new coat of paint (the color is Comex “Arcilla Verde”) and new hardware from Anthropologie.

Biggest Indulgence: The subtle removable wallpaper in the bedroom.

Best Advice: Buy items that you truly love! You’ll always find the perfect place for it.

Most of the furniture came from stores in Mexico City such as Cé de Casa and Dettaglio. The couch was provided by the landlord so I just added textiles and a bunch of throw pillows. A few accent pieces are from West Elm and Gaia. A vast majority of the artwork and accessories are from antique and artisan markets in Mexico (like the big Aztec calendar in the entryway). The bedroom wallpaper is from Vinilismo.
