In the most northern province of the Netherlands lies the quaint city of Appingedam. It’s such a charming place, that when Ria and Piet Veld sold their previous house there eighteen years ago, they didn’t want to leave. The only other property for sale at the time was this Scandinavian-style cottage, which, while cute and full of character, looked dark and small due to all the wood paneling. Its location next to one of the city’s many canals, though, was absolutely perfect. So Piet and Ria took the plunge and have never looked back or regretted the move.

At first, Ria was afraid to remove the wood paneling. She wanted to preserve the house’s intimate atmosphere. But as soon as they upgraded to white plastered walls, the home became instantly brighter. The light walls also serve as a perfect backdrop for Ria’s design talent for combining vintage finds with modern pieces .

With over ten years of secondhand, vintage and antique shopping experience, Ria knows how to spot the good pieces in thrift stores and on Marktplaats (the Dutch Craigslist). And she enjoys sharing her passion for crafting beautiful vignettes on Instagram. It’s an engrossing hobby, but for Ria, it’s more than about looks; it’s about how a home feels. “To me, first and foremost a home must feel cozy and welcoming!”
