If you’re planning to tackle a kitchen renovation this year, then you’ve likely budgeted for built-in cabinets, custom countertops, and stainless steel appliances — they’re each a major investment.

But there’s a new (or, actually…old) aesthetic that is coming back into fashion that’ll also save you a ton of money. It’s an unfitted kitchen; it not only brings an old-world feel into your home, but may save you thousands of dollars on a kitchen makeover that’ll take half the time.

Unfitted Kitchens Create Whimsical Spaces with Freestanding Furniture

As described in a caption by Micah from @brookandbramblefarm on Instagram, an unfitted kitchen “will not only lift the weight of a huge monetary burden off of your shoulders; it will give you a kitchen that transcends trends.”

Historically, kitchens relied on large pieces of furniture — including hutches, hoosier cabinets, freestanding tables, cupboards, shelves and more — for prep space and storage rather than built-in cabinetry.

In fact, modern kitchen cabinetry as it is known today wasn’t popularized until the 1920s. Not only do these freestanding pieces give a space much more texture and interest, but they’re so much cheaper to source than having custom cabinets and countertops installed.

If you’re going for an antique look, sourcing large pieces of storage furniture from secondhand stores and websites is a great option to keep costs low and aesthetics strong. As Micah mentioned, you’ll just want to make sure you have enough drawer units and worktop space to make the kitchen as functional as possible.

And you’ll have to become okay with the fact that your fridge, stove, and sink won’t be as seamlessly incorporated into the design as they would in a modern-style kitchen.

Take inspiration from historic unfitted kitchens to lessen costs in your renovation. Consider having built-ins against the back wall, but opt for the freestanding TORNVIKEN kitchen island. A balance of both could be beautiful and affordable.

“Wow, I unintentionally did this! I have old dry sinks and antique hutches, and I love it!” one person wrote in a comment on Micah’s post. Another added: “I didn’t know this look had an official name until just now! I’ve always hated the built-in cabinets look!”

An unfitted kitchen may be the way to go with your 2026 kitchen renovation. You’ll save money and create a space that is totally unique.
