This apartment was in original condition (circa 1986) when we moved in pre-kids (mirrored kitchen backsplash, mirrored closet doors, wall-to-wall carpet and laminate countertops). Even still, both my husband and I knew right away when we walked in that this was the apartment for us because of the wall of windows in the main room, generous bedroom sizes, and the 10’ ceiling height. The open kitchen was a draw as well and, even though open kitchens have been a hot debate lately, we still love ours!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Classic and tailored. Warm, comfortable and livable with touches of color.
Inspiration: Travel, Instagram, my old Domino magazines.
Favorite Element: My bed—it seems I can never get enough sleep in this life with two young kids!
Proudest DIY: My husband and I built and covered our headboard—one run to Home Depot, an online tutorial, and it was done. We recently changed the fabric and it freshened up the room. I love how it turned out and that we spent next-to-nothing on it!
Biggest Challenge: The large kitchen island is both a blessing and a curse. It’s great for things we like to do together but also collects junk! It takes discipline to collect what’s left on the island each night and put everything back in its place (toys, mail, lunchboxes, etc).
Biggest Indulgence: Our custom kitchen cabinetry—custom does cost but it also comes with benefits like designing to your exact needs and customer service. White painted cabinets chip over the years—I have a paint touch-up kit and have also had some of my cabinet door and drawer fronts repainted by them.
Best Advice: When hanging my gallery wall, a friend advised me “eyeball it,” which went against my better judgement but I couldn’t be happier with the result.
What’s your best home secret? Clean little bits at a time to stay (relatively) on top of the family mess! Each night I make a round through the living room to gather toys and I frequently throw small loads of laundry in.
