This Renovated Swedish Home Is Full of “a Lot of Everything”
When Emy Stenudd and Joakim Johansson bought their home in Vindeln, a small town in Northern Sweden, over five years ago, they immediately knew it was the space for them. The people in their life, however, weren’t so sure.

“Our friends told us that we were crazy for buying the house,” Stenudd shares. “Our parents were almost angry with us, but we knew we were going to make it! We found it online and called the realtor right away.”
The home needed a full renovation, but Stenudd thought it was “perfect” and had always dreamed of completing a restoration project. And it had some other bonuses, too, like how they bought it for less than they had planned for, it had ample space (a rarity in their small town), and it had sentimental ties to the local community.
“A long time ago, a family called Malmros lived here, and the man in the house worked at the old school, and the woman had ballet lessons in the house,” Stenudd says. “So, there we had our name on the house, Malmrosvillan. In English, it means ‘the villa of Malmros.’”
Since buying their home, the couple and their three children, Adina, Vincent, and Kian (plus their hamster and cat!), have grown individually around renovations. “Our youngest son was born two weeks after we moved in, so during my maternity leave, me and the kids were often down at the river throwing rocks and eating lunch and snacks,” Stenudd explains. “It’s an amazing place to grow up!”
There are still renovations that the couple wants to do. Still, they’ve struck a healthy balance between beautifying their space, enjoying their home, and making quality memories with their family. It’s a colorful oasis to cultivate those happy moments.
