Grace Mathisen was born in Vancouver and has lived in this 727-square-foot apartment in Mount Pleasant for the last eight years. “I have lived in this apartment since before I began my undergrad, and it has seen me through several different phases of my life. I used to work in film, but now I work for a legal nonprofit,” Grace begins.

Grace says she got a deal on this rental when the previous tenant moved out unexpectedly. “When I saw the ad, they were looking for someone to move in the next day so they didn’t raise the price even though this was at the beginning of the housing crisis. I really lucked out,” she writes.

"Lighting is the most important element so get lamps you like," Grace advises. "In terms of configuring how you want your furniture to fit the space, start with where you'd most want to drink your morning coffee and go from there."

“With the exception of the rental price, my apartment is very much a Vancouverite apartment. It’s become a love letter to the city. Over the years, I’ve picked things up from different neighborhoods, like the horse lamp in my living room from Grandview and the faux hide rug in the dining area from Kits,” Grace writes.

Thanks, Grace!
