Hoping to refresh your space in small (but impactful!) ways in 2026? There’s a viral kitchen DIY you should definitely get your eyes on, especially if you love a bit of whimsy where you least expect it.

A TikTok user recently shared how she upgraded her kitchen cabinets using a simple wood trim that you can pick up for just $11 at Walmart — it completely changed her kitchen’s aesthetic for the better.

An Under $20 Cottagecore Kitchen Transformation

In December, Emily Welch (@emilywelchstyle) totally transformed her kitchen in an afternoon using some simple scalloped wood trim, a bit of paint, and superglue. Calling it “the easiest DIY ever,” this adorable project took just a few hours and took her builder-grade cabinets from basic to looking more like something plucked out of a fairy-tale picture book.

“Yep. The scalloped cabinets are the move …. found my weekend plans,” one person shared on Emily’s post. Another added: “The sweet scalloped edge is perfection!!”

You can source scalloped trim from various places, but Walmart sells a pack of six panels for just under $11 (a pack of 24 panels goes for just under $40!). Each trim piece measures just under 16 inches long, so all you have to do is measure the length of your upper cabinets and do a bit of math to figure out how much trim you’ll need.

And because it’s made with lightweight plywood, you can easily cut the trim using a small handsaw or even a sharp craft knife. Then, sand down the edge to remove any rough bits left behind.

You can paint the trim to match your cabinets, or you can go even more whimsical and paint them a contrasting color, stain them, or even hand-paint floral motifs to really lean into the charm. This trim can also be used around door and window frames to give basic trim an adorable upgrade.

With just a pack of plywood trim, a bit of paint, and some adhesive, you can totally transform your kitchen without having to blow through your budget. New Year, same kitchen, but major new aesthetic!
