Freddie’s Bushwick loft is a perfect example of taking a raw, industrial space and turning it into a home. But rather than just filling it with newly purchased furniture, he both thrifted and found elements to add warmth to his home… as well as custom built many of the elements in the home.

The wall that separates the entryway from the bedroom, for instance, is a DIY. One corner of the loft has been transformed into a casual seating area for projector viewings (on a DIY projector screen frame). The loft came without any closets, so Freddie made his own storage.

Mixed in with functional items are those that reference travel and the globe—like a classroom map found at local thrift store Green Village Used Furniture and Clothing—as well as plenty of plants (over 50, he estimates). And while there is a lot going on visually, Freddie wisely used color—in this case a seafoam green—to connect disparate designs.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Industrial and thrift store look-and-feel meets cozy loft.

Inspiration: All of the lofts in NYC that I saw in movies as a kid.

Favorite Element: The custom bookshelves that are actually hidden storage.

Biggest Challenge: Learning how to keep my plants alive! I have over 50 throughout the apartment, sans some unfortunate casualties.

What Friends Say: A mix of “You live here?” and “Where did you get this from?”

Biggest Embarrassment: All of the hidden junk drawers in my space. I keep on telling myself that I’ll clean them out soon.

Proudest DIY: Custom bookshelves that are actually storage. I have no closets in the loft so I had to figure out ways to create storage in an interesting way.

Biggest Indulgence: My plants—I didn’t know they could be so expensive!

Best Advice: Don’t think you have to just stick to one style in your apartment, however, try to pick an accent color that you can weave throughout the apartment. I chose seafoam, a light blue-green, to incorporate into different areas of the space.

Dream Sources: A thrift store upstate that has all of the things I didn’t know I needed
