It can be hard to shake that temporary feeling of a rental home. But when Vartan Antonian and his husband left New York City and Los Angeles a year and a half ago, landing in this 900-square-foot, century-old West Hollywood rental apartment, they wanted to put extra effort into their new home. And they would be starting practically from scratch.

Vartan, a self-taught interior decorator, and his husband, admit that they barely brought any furniture with them on the cross-country move. “We wanted to start fresh and I was very excited to put my love for design to the test,” Vartan begins.

"All of our friends know how seriously we take our space. They joke about it all the time as if it’s our prized honor roll child," Vartan writes. "We have some artistic photos from our wedding on the wall, and our larger art we commissioned from local artists in L.A. We created and converted the pieces with them. We have a lot of coffee table books and crystals too that we’ve picked up from our trips and travels."

“It took us a year to complete and we LOVE our home. It’s contemporary but still uniquely us — a little quirky and eclectic, and we learned to truly love and embrace color through the process, too.”

The apartment came with remodeled floors and cabinetry along with some “gorgeous historic trim and built-ins.” But, it also came with almost completely all white everything.

"What worked best for me was to find an inspiration — an item, a feeling, something … then build slowly. Don’t rush the process," Vartan advises on decorating a home. "Enjoy it, be patient and slowly mix your ingredients, ensuring each step takes into account everything else that precedes it. It was almost methodical for me. But the end result, in my opinion, is perfect — every single item, vetted and hand chosen by us."

To kick off adding their own personality to the space, they purchased what Vartan describes as his “dream marble coffee table” from SoHo Home, and then says they “built the rest of it step by step — some high and expensive, some not — but all intentional and curated for us.”

While their home is filled with special items, Vartan says his favorite thing isn’t actually a thing. “It’s a feeling. A feeling of control, utter comfort, safety. Our home is inspiring to me,” he writes. “I’m always happy to stay in, and I didn’t used to be that way. But now, this space is everything I’ve wanted it to be, even in its small 900-square-foot footprint. Truly a haven.”
