When one clever crafter gained a larger bed but lost a headboard, a humble roll of washi tape came to the rescue, completing the look without destroying the budget.
Here was the issue. Georgina recently replaced her old bed with a much larger super-king, which didn't come with a headboard. As a result, the plain wall above her bed suddenly looked very bare. She came up with a smart way to elegantly and affordably demarcate the sleeping space.
The new headboard—created from washi tape—is perfectly suited to the finely tailored, crisp, piped-edge bedding Georgina of Homeware Blog chose. It's like the bed linen set included a duvet, shams, and a roll of washi tape.
Georgina was able to complete this little project in almost no time:
This took five minutes to complete. I originally tried with another brand of tape which was too sticky and thin. I like the IKEA tape because it is thicker and will not damage the paint on the wall if you remove it.
It is a simple, quick, and easy DIY that I can easily remove.
Here we see the original headboard, which looks very comfy but also leaves a lot of blank space above the bed. Large-scale art is one option, but washi tape, on the other hand, is basically zero risk in all regards. It's removable, it's easy to rearrange, it's not going to fall on you, and it allows you to create a "headboard" with proportions that look exactly right. Georgina probably spent under $5 on tape, no movers or assembly required.
If you're interested in doing something similar yourself, IKEA has a pretty interesting selection of washi tape: There's the black-and-white stripes set; the black, white, peach, and orange grid and splotches set; the winter holiday set; the mustard and yellow set; and the wide pink, blue, and green set. Unfortunately none of them are available online, so remember to stock up next time you go in person. And remember Georgina's words of advice:
Make sure you get your lines straight. But if you don't, you can always peel it off and start again.
Thank you, Georgina of Homeware Blog!
