There are obvious perks to living with roommates, like paying less rent and having someone to bring up your packages when you go out of town. Of course, there are downsides, too, like having to bite your tongue when one of them introduces an unsightly piece of decor to your shared living space. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful that my old roommate equipped our living room with a coffee table, bookshelf, and floor lamp last year, but now that she and all of her items are gone, I’ve been having lots of fun picking out new pieces that suit the space so much better.

The first replacement on my list was a new floor lamp, as that’s easily the most used item in our living room. I was poking around on Wayfair when I came across the Helena Task Floor Lamp from the Kelly Clarkson collection. It looked like exactly what I needed, and now that it’s actually in my home, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Oh, and it’s currently half off!

What Is the Helena Task Floor Lamp?

The first thing that struck me about the Helena lamp was its vintage-inspired design. I’ve seen this exact style of lamp in movie interiors set in the early 20th century, and I’ve always admired its posh vibe and slim gold silhouette. Also, this is a task lamp, so you can adjust the head via the swing arm to point the light exactly where you want it, which comes in handy for reading and working. The lamp’s height is adjustable, too; at its tallest, it measures 65 inches.

This corded lamp features a convenient foot switch, so you don’t have to get up from your seat to turn it on or off. It requires a 40-watt LED bulb and even arrives with one already in the package, so you can use your lamp straight away. And, because the lamp is made of metal and iron, it’s very durable and doesn’t wobble or become unscrewed if you adjust its head.

Why I Love the Helena Task Floor Lamp

Before getting the Helena lamp, we had an arched floor lamp with a big, round navy-blue shade. It provided a good amount of light, but I felt like it overwhelmed our small living room. Plus, I was not a fan of the blue shade, as it didn’t match anything else in the space. Part of the reason why I opted to replace it with this Wayfair number is because the Helena lamp is much more discreet and demure. It’s skinny and tucks nicely into the corner by our sofa, and it doesn’t emit quite as much light as our old lamp. Assembly-wise, my roommate was able to put the lamp together by herself in minutes, no tools required.

The softer light creates a cozier atmosphere compared with what we had before, so if you’re after a lamp that illuminates an entire room, you should opt for a different style. But I love being able to sit under the lamp’s concentrated light when reading or scrolling on my phone. I use it instead of the overhead light pretty much all the time, regardless of whether I’m eating, working, or watching a show.

Finally, I can’t get over how expensive the Helena lamp looks. The furniture in my living room is minimal and modern in terms of design, so it’s nice to break up the blandness with something gold and slightly more ornate. It almost looks like something I got at an antique shop, but really, you can snag the lamp now on Wayfair for just $153 and have no trouble styling it with the rest of your decor. Trust me — this is a deal worth taking advantage of!

Buy: Helena Task Floor Lamp, $152.99 (normally $264)
