Now that the year is almost over, trend predictions are rolling in from brands, industry insiders, and content creators. It can be difficult to figure out what’s really going on from all of those forecasts, but for the past few years, Pinterest has helped out with its “Pinterest Predicts” report that zeroes in on trends well before they spike in the zeitgeist. The good news is that Pinterest’s 2024 edition just dropped today, and they’re sharing the trends you need to know now based on months of global search data and analysis.

On the whole, Sydney Stanback, global trends and insights lead at Pinterest, says 2024 is going to be a year of showing up more boldly in life with “more expressive spaces.” And if you’re in the New York City area this week, you’re in luck. For the first time, Pinterest has created a pop-up shopping experience in the Meatpacking district of Manhattan so consumers can shop the Predicts trends immediately (they’re also shoppable on the Pinterest platform as well).

On to the good stuff — here’s what to keep your eye on for 2024.

Hot Metals

Bye bye, brass and matte black! Pinterest expects the cooler end of the metallic spectrum to dominate 2024, as chrome and aluminum furniture, fixtures, and design details surge in the home market. “Aluminum furniture” as a search term is up 45%, and “aluminum door design” is up 70%. According to Pinterest, cooler metals started infiltrating fashion and beauty last year (think: silver manicures and sparkly jewelry) and are now headed for the home space, and we at Apartment Therapy noticed an uptick in aluminum decor in summer 2022, too.

Get ready to level up your at-home coffee bar. According to “Pinterest Predicts,” Boomers and Gen Xers will be tricking out their coffee corners — no matter the size — with all the trappings of an IRL cafe or bistro. As search terms, “coffee bar styling” is up 1,125%, and “kafe aesthetic” is up 820%. Chalkboards are coming back, too. “Chalk sign ideas” searches are up 100%, and “cafe chalkboard” is up 50%.

Western Gothic

What do you get when you cross a classic Americana and a Ralph Lauren-esque aesthetic with a moody palette? Pinterest is calling it “Western Gothic” and believes denim, dark fringe, and deep, stormy paint colors will be all the rage next year. The search term “western bedding ideas” is up a staggering 310%, while “country room ideas” is up 125%.

Maybe you’ve noticed kitchens have been becoming, well, more kitschy. That’s exactly what this trend is pinpointing — an embrace of retro appliances, quirky design details, poppy palettes, and vintage finds galore. The term “eclectic kitchen decor” is up 50% in search on Pinterest, and “eccentric kitchen” is up a whopping 160%. Expect to see people expressing their personalities in their cooking areas, and white and beige cabinetry taking a backseat to funky colors like green and pink.
