Need More Courage or Heart? These 7 Rooms Are Inspired by ‘The Wizard of Oz’
If there’s one thing Apartment Therapy and Dorothy Gale agree on, it’s that “there’s no place like home.” Okay, we’d probably all agree that ruby red shoes truly make any outfit magical. But it’s that love of home that brings us here today.
The film adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” celebrates its 80th anniversary on August 25th and in honor of this special occasion, e-design company Modsy is doing another one of their modern reimaginings, this time bringing together our love of all things Oz with interior design. Decide if what you need is a little more brains, a little more heart, a little more courage, or you know, just a fresh coat of paint and new throw pillows, and then scroll down to get inspired by seven interiors, each paying homage to a different Wizard of Oz character.
Dorothy
Modsy’s take on a room inspired by our heroine obviously plays with her Kansas farm girl roots, but doesn’t forget that she’s a brave young woman who might want some more modern sensibilities infused into her overall aesthetic. To achieve this look, mix some rustic and traditional elements—like the bed frame and nightstands seen here—with more modern decor, like rattan accents and eclectic art pieces. Oh, and don’t forget a snuggly place for your canine sidekick. Is there even a Dorothy without Toto?

The Scarecrow
I know the Scarecrow is more of an outdoorsy man, but perhaps he could also “while away the hours” in a room like the one he inspired Modsy to design. If, like the Scarecrow, you walk that line of chic farmer meets learned scholar, this room might be the one for you. There are lots of farmhouse elements in the weathered wood furniture pieces and natural textures throughout, but the sophisticated color palette and the “old-world library” decor give it a much more elevated look. No wonder Dorothy missed the Scarecrow most of all.

The Tin Man
Perhaps, all along, the Tin Man had both a heart and a wild design aesthetic. If you, too, are just bursting with feelings while also feeling most at home in an industrial setting, Modsy suggests incorporating lots of metal pieces into your space, but breaking them up with fun, colorful pop art. Keep an oil can handy, you might be weeping with joy in this trendy space.

The Cowardly Lion
Why I oughta have an eclectic design aesthetic that truly brings the outside indoors, said the Cowardly Lion, probably at some point. The Modsy team was inspired by the Lion’s nerve, and designed a room full of bold colors and prints, as well as big, statement furniture. I mean, a knit seagrass headboard? Yes, forever and ever. There’s no time to be shy about decor when you’re the King or Queen of your own domain. More leather throw pillows for everyone, honestly.

The Wicked Witch of the West
Should I be concerned that my favorite room of the bunch belongs to the villain? You know what, I don’t feel bad—I’ve seen “Wicked” and I know that this lady was just misunderstood. I’m here for the bold, deep green, I’m here for the drama, and I’m definitely here for that tufted chesterfield sofa. If you, too, feel like the Witch at heart, you’ll need to look for a mix of traditional pieces, lush fabrics, and modern decor. Leave all liquids at the door, okay?

Glinda the Good Witch
If you really want to pay homage to Glinda, you’ll live in a giant bubble. Since that doesn’t seem the most practical, maybe you can take a few suggestions from Modsy’s design based on our resident Good Witch. They kept this space light, feminine, and dream-like by mixing pinks, golds, and neutrals throughout, and combined light, airy fabrics with heavier materials like marble. If I only had a wand, I’d be conjuring up that detailed cut-out Anthropologie armoire immediately.

The Wizard of Oz
The Modsy team does not put the bed in this Wizard-inspired room behind some lush curtains, which feels like a missed opportunity, but otherwise this room feels very Emerald City 2019. In the film, the city of Oz is full of art deco elements, which have been incorporated into this bedroom everywhere from the wallpaper choice to the curved headboard and armchair. Also, can a person ever have too much green velvet?
