Thanks to scores of innovative, forward-thinking designers, the process of building a home continues to evolve into one that prioritizes convenience, cost and the well-being of our ecosystem. Yves Béhar is one of the latest contributors to the accessory dwelling unit market with a line of prefab homes.

If you joined us in marveling at his shapeshifting apartment in a box and an equally intriguing smart turntable, then it should come as no surprise that the Swiss designer went all out with his latest residential venture. Béhar’s eco-friendly, affordable prefab home – dubbed the YB1 – is the result of a design collaboration with LA-based LivingHomes and Plant Prefab.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Yves Béhar on his first home product for a really critical, fast-growing segment in housing: ADUs,” Plant Prefab CEO Steve Glenn said in a statement. “Yves is one of the top designers in the world and the YB1, the first in a line of LivingHomes he’s designed for us, reflects the incredible attention to form and functionality and ecological footprint that he brings to all products he develops.”

Unlike many that have come before them, Béhar’s residences are decidedly anti-cookie cutter in that they can be customized to suit the taste of individual owners. For instance, there are three available versions that allow the buyer to select from three different floor plans, roof systems, window size and location and the cladding material.

For now, the YB1 measures 650 square feet, but future designs will start at 250 square feet and max out at a roomier yet still conservative 1,000 square feet. Estimates for the off-site building process are approximately one month while the designers anticipate on-site construction will be completed in one day. Currently, the YB1 has a $280,000 price tag, but according to Béhar’s plan, it could drop as low as $100,000 as the project progresses.
