Is incorporating some color into your life on your resolutions list for next year, possibly with some beautiful flowers? If so, you’re in luck because 1-800-Flowers named a super gorgeous perennial as its 2025 Flower of the Year: the ranunculus. These lovely flowers, which are cousins of the more common buttercup, would make a great addition to your mantel or dining room, or work great as a gift to a loved one.

“It’s always exciting for us to reveal our Flower and Plant of the Year, especially as we ring in 2025 — a year filled with anticipation for joy, good fortune, and endless possibilities. Our selections not only align with current cultural moments, but also reflect the latest home decor trends,” Alfred Palomares, vice president of merchandising of 1-800-Flowers.com said in a press release, noting that the ranunculus was chosen because it represents “enthusiasm, love, admiration, and happiness.”

As described by 1-800-Flowers, these blooms come in a variety of shades, ranging from soft whites and pinks to fiery and bold reds and oranges, and look similar to their more common yellow cousins. Their petals are “soft and buttery,” and the stems move in different directions depending on where they get the best sunlight, creating a wild, wonderful bouquet.

Like most bouquets, it’s essential to take care of your blooms to ensure they remain fresh as long as possible. According to 1-800-Flowers, you need to be gentle with the stems, since despite being firm, they bruise quite easily.

First, you’ll need to snip half an inch off the ends with a pair of scissors or a sharp knife. After that, fill a clean vase with water and add flower food (1-800-Flowers provides some, but you can get your own if you buy your blooms from somewhere else) and arrange your flowers in the vase. You can add ferns beforehand to give the bouquet more structure.

It’s best to keep your bouquet out of the sun and out of the way of any drafts. Change out the water every two or three days to avoid algae, and add more flower food after a few days. If the bottoms of the stems begin to soften, snip off another half inch. By doing this, you can keep your flowers fresh for up to two weeks.

If you’re interested in growing your own ranunculus, 1-800-Flowers has a helpful guide for that, too.

1-800-Flowers also named the snake plant as its 2025 Plant of the Year, so if you’re planning to add to your houseplant collection with something equally low-effort, keep this low-maintainence one in mind. The flower company says the snake plant symbolizes “longevity, health, and growth.”

Ring in 2025 with a flower that symbolizes love and happiness and won’t take years off you trying to keep it alive — and while you’re picking up your new ranunculus, consider a sweet snake plant to celebrate the new year.
