While green hues have dominated the 2022 Color of the Year announcements, 1-800-Flowers.com has extended beyond the color trends with its 2022 Plant of the Year announcement.

In another turbulent year, hope and calm are two things that have become an (even more) important factor, so it’s no surprise that the company has picked a plant that embodies those positive feelings. Introducing: the Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia).

This air purifying plant is emblematic of good fortune and prosperity and will bring luck and happiness to any space, according to 1-800-Flowers.com. A Baby Rubber Plant is a great representation of optimism for the new year ahead.

“The symbolism behind the Baby Rubber Plant is really about good fortune, good luck, and happiness,” says Alfred Palomares, Vice President of Merchandising at 1-800-Flowers.com, said in a press release. “All those qualities tie back to the idea of 2022 being about joy and happiness.”

Native to the rainforests of South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Florida, Baby Rubber Plants, in their natural habitat, thrive in high humidity and consume the nutrients from tree debris and other detritus of the environment.

Widely considered as one of the easiest plants to grow and care for, peperomias can survive in many conditions and don’t require much watering—they will be perfectly happy being abandoned for a week or two as they only need water when the soil is completely dry.

Additionally, 1-800-Flowers.com has revealed tulips to be its 2022 Flower of the Year, a popular pick among customers for many occasions.
