Why we have a crush on this property

There’s no shortage of color in this stunning shotgun house for sale in New Orleans. Its two front doors welcome visitors with panels of colorful stained glass, while shades of teal and pink are splashed on the walls of the living room and bedrooms.

A “shotgun house,” for those unfamiliar, is an architectural style that’s thought to have originated in New Orleans. These are narrow, one-story homes built on a series of brick piers. The rectangular abodes measure up to 12 feet wide, are about three to six rooms deep, and typically have front-gabled roofs. The name “shotgun house” is said to come from the idea that a bullet shot through the front door could fly clean through the house and out the open back door. Another theory says the name comes from the African word togun, a Yoruba term that means “gathering place.”

This five-bedroom for sale in New Orleans’ Faubourg Marigny neighborhood is considered a double shotgun because its double-doored layout resembles two side-by-side shotgun houses. This means the home’s new owner could live on one side and rent out the other for some extra income.

In addition to its varying hues, the interior of the place oozes with old-world charm. Exceedingly delightful details include pocket doors, transom windows, old hardwoods, French doors, and a grand total of 10 fireplaces and mantels.

Both sides’ kitchens and bathrooms boast hand-painted talavera tile, and outside, there’s a small backyard with a storage shed and plenty of room for al fresco dining.

The home is listed by Greta Garner of Keller Williams Realty for $589,000.
