Nicolette and Michael built their very own tiny house in 2018 in just seven months. Thirty feet long (and built on a 28-foot long trailer), they’ve fit a lot into a home that’s only 8.5 feet wide and 13.5 feet tall. Yes, there’s a toilet and a shower. Their kitchen features an oven and four-burner stove and even a full-size refrigerator. There are two desks for working and a futon couch that can transform into a guest sleeping area. There’s a TV, a closet, a fireplace, and even a cozy reading nook. A large wall of IKEA bookshelves holds tons of stuff. And it’s all in the charming style they were going for, a bit farmhouse, a bit industrial.
They were able to make the custom home of their dreams by doing everything themselves (along with some help from very generous friends from time to time), from building the sub floor, to putting up walls to painting and decorating. It was a labor of love for the couple, but it was also the right move for them physically and financially: Michael is currently a full-time student, and this was a big motivation for wanting to build the tiny house… not only do they have financial freedom by owning their house, they can move the home with them wherever they may settle after he graduates.
