When shopping for items for your home, you’ll notice that there are plenty of retailers that are basically one-stop shops for everything from furniture and decor to bedding and bath. While we do love those places for the convenience, there’s something to be said for shopping at a brand that sells just one or two things — but does it really, really well. Take, for example, 7th Avenue, which sells just three (pretty incredible) sofas but in dozens of configurations for easy customization.

To see if this sofa is worth the hype, we visited the 7th Avenue store in New York City to test them out for ourselves. As part of our Personal Shopper series, we send our editors to the storefronts of our favorite brands to sit on, touch, and examine their offerings in person, giving you all our opinions on what’s worth buying and for whom. For this installment, we checked out the three different 7th Avenue sofa models, including two with luxuriously deep seats that are perfect for lounging.

Why 7th Avenue?

Launched in 2022, 7th Avenue is a direct-to-consumer (DTC) company that focuses solely on seating. It launched with just one sofa, and although it hasn’t strayed from its original silhouette, it now offers the same sofa in slightly different styles, including an extra-deep model and a slimmer option for smaller spaces. It stands out for offering a wide range of customizations beyond the typical fabric and color options, like storage in any seat and different cushion fill options.

The 7th Avenue sofa is also exceptionally good for families, since it’s completely modular and can be added to or reconfigured based on your needs. The fabric options are all stain-resistant and washable, so households with kids and pets can rest assured that they’re buying something durable. In addition to sofas, 7th Avenue sells armchairs, daybeds, and outdoor seating, all of which are modular, customizable, and designed for heavy use.

The Criteria

We judged every 7th Avenue sofa based on the following criteria:

  • Overall sit: What posture does the sofa best support? How deep or shallow are the seats? Are the cushions soft or firm on the back and arms?
  • Seat firmness: How soft or firm are the seat cushions? How do they contribute to overall posture and comfort?
  • Customizability: Does it come in different varieties? How many colors, finishes, materials, or sizes is it available in? How granular can you get when customizing the sofa?
  • Multifunctionality: Does it have storage capacity? What else can the sofa do or help with?
  • Sturdiness: Is the frame made from durable, high-quality materials? Does the sofa wobble or creak when you’re on it?
  • Appearance: What style does it best suit? Does it lean more traditional (i.e., deep hues, busy details, flanged edges) or more contemporary (i.e., clean lines, low profiles, mid-century modern design elements)?

Every Editor-Tested Sofa at 7th Avenue

Best for Families: Classic Standard 3-Seat Modular Sofa

What we love

  • Supportive feel and pitch for lounging and working
  • Most affordable option
  • Chenille fabric is neutral but has texture for added dimension

Good to know

  • Much larger than a standard sofa

Danielle & Alexa’s thoughts: The Classic Standard is 7th Avenue’s baseline sofa style, and it combines comfort, support, and versatility in a family-friendly package. It has a supportive, upright seat that feels great to lean against, with a pitch that’s ideal for both lounging and working from home. Our lower backs felt supported even without a lumbar pillow. We also love the armrests, which are wide and sturdy enough to hold a laptop or plate, and are comfy to lean against, thanks to the included side pillows.

The covers are removable for easy cleaning and changing, so you can switch out the look as needed through the years. The sofa we saw was upholstered in the performance-woven chenille fabric in the oatmeal beige shade, which had some texture and dimension despite the neutral color. The overall look of the fabric was tailored and not baggy (a common complaint with slipcovered sofas), and we love that the fabric is designed to be water-repellent and stain-resistant.

This sofa is incredibly comfortable, and we didn’t feel like we were sinking into it too much. The memory foam cushions have excellent bounce back, and the back cushions are impressively customizable — you can choose between medium-soft and medium-firm, and add or remove fill to your heart’s desire thanks to the included fill packets. There’s really nothing to complain about with this sofa, except that it’s pretty large — the smallest configuration (a loveseat) is 94 inches long, which is much bigger than a standard sofa. It’s sturdy, easy to reconfigure, and perfect for families or pet owners who want something that’s equal parts durable and stylish.

Best for Lounging: Extra-Deep Standard 3-Seat Modular Sofa

What we love

  • Extra deep seat is perfect for napping or lounging
  • Performance velvet upholstery is luxe and low-maintenance
  • Large armrests and cushions create a grand silhouette

Good to know

  • Too deep to sit upright comfortably

Danielle & Alexa’s thoughts: If you prefer an even deeper sofa, the Extra-Deep Standard version is for you. It’s basically the size of a twin bed, making it pretty amazing for napping and relaxing while still looking tailored and high-end. Personally, it’s a bit too deep for our liking, especially if you’re trying to sit upright, but if you’re tall or want something solely for lounging, then you can’t do much better. And if you do want to add support while sitting upright, you could always add a lumbar pillow to the back.

The wide cushions and squared armrests create an oversized, grand silhouette, making this sofa a real statement piece. We love the performance velvet upholstery, which looks super luxe and really elevates the overall look — especially when it’s in the dark olive green color we saw. The fact that it’s a performance fabric really seals the deal, creating an elegant vibe that isn’t fussy or high maintenance.

The cushions felt the same as they did on the Classic Standard model, with excellent support and bounce back. Because of the extra depth, this sofa required a bit more effort to get out of, but that’s to be expected. As with all of 7th Avenue’s sofas, this model is easy to reconfigure and customize, plus has washable covers for extra easy care. Overall, the Extra-Deep Standard sofa is a statement-making and nap-friendly choice that offers the ultimate in comfort.

Best for Smaller Spaces: Extra-Deep Slim 3-Seat Modular Sofa

What we love

  • Slimmer profile without sacrificing seat depth
  • Armrests still large enough to be functional

Good to know

  • Slim size is currently only available with the Extra-Deep depth

Danielle & Alexa’s thoughts: 7th Avenue’s latest addition to its sofa lineup is the Extra-Deep Slim, which has the same depth as the Extra-Deep Standard but in a more compact package. The 3-seater measures 108 inches compared with the Standard’s 132 inches, which is still larger than average, but better suited to an apartment or smaller space. Take note that the Slim size is currently only available in the Extra-Deep depth, but we hope a Classic Slim model is released soon.

Otherwise, this sofa is the same as the Extra-Deep Standard, with extremely deep seats that are designed for napping and lounging comfortably. Sitting upright isn’t quite as comfortable since you’d have to be very tall for your feet to touch the ground, plus it’s a bit challenging to get out of — but it’s definitely worth it if your first priority is lounging. The version we saw was upholstered in the same performance woven chenille as the Classic Standard model, and we loved the subtle texture and stain resistance.

Our favorite thing about this sofa, though, is that it fulfills a pretty tall order: It’s a big, loungy sofa that doesn’t have added bulk, making it a dream come true for smaller spaces. That’s especially true if you opt for storage seats, which will give you even greater functionality when every square inch counts. Aside from the size and storage capabilities, this sofa’s modularity, range of customizations, and easy upholstery care really can’t be beat.
