Before & After: A Blank Box Living Room Gets a Warm Multi-Functional Makeover
Gone are the days of the traditional living room. A modern creative woman, Lindsay designed her “living room” into a multi-functional space for all of her personal and professional needs. After 10 years in Los Angeles, Lindsay came to Joshua Tree seeking open space, a slower pace, a more affordable cost of living and time to explore her creativity. Definitive ties to desert vibes inspired her to build the functional space she needed for herself and her guests to call home.
Lindsay needed a space that could keep up with her multi-dimensional lifestyle. She explains, “I needed all furniture to be easily movable — when I host workshops, the living room becomes a workspace. I restyle the living room often depending on whether I’m entertaining, hosting, or enjoying an evening by the fire.”
No matter what gathering she has in mind, Lindsay wanted her design choices to enhance the most beautiful parts of the room: the natural light and the fireplace. To complement the the bright, airy light that streams from the large front window, she made a macramé curtain with yarn and a pine closet rod. The unique materials allow for a feeling of privacy while letting in all the warm sunlight. And there’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint and a simple cinder-block and pine shelf (a DIY project with materials from Home Depot) to adorn the room with finishing touches.
