Ricky & McCary’s One-of-a-Kind Style
Name: Ricky & McCary
Location: Carroll Gardens/Gowanus; Brooklyn, New York
Size: 800 square feet
Years lived in: 6 years; Rented
What do you get when two people with great taste move in together? A beautiful apartment like this one, where two design sensibilities (she loves prints and patterns, while he’s a bit more minimal) merge seamlessly to create a new, completely unique style.
Ricky and McCary are also the stars of the sixth episode of Apartment Therapy’s A Line video series. Each episode compares two apartments in the same building, with identical floor plans, and looks at the unique choices that each apartment’s occupants have made to make their place feel like home. Watch the video above, and then head upstairs to tour the apartment of McCary and Ricky’s neighbors, Giverny and Mara, to see what they’ve done with an identical floor plan.
It’s been two years since the A Line series filmed, so there have been a lot of changes in McCary and Ricky’s place. Their home, like any home, is constantly evolving, and it’s fun to compare these more recent photos with the video and see what’s new.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Eclectic, modern, casual, one of a kind.
Inspiration: World travels — Mediterranean, South America, Southern US.
Favorite Element: The plants and succulents found in each room truly make the home feel like an oasis within the concrete jungle. Each one has its own story. Having a ton of windows and three exposures helps.
Biggest Challenge: How to best utilize a small kitchen space. Our solution was to hang the pots for pot and pans, elevate the drying racks and use a magnetic knife strip to keep the counter space free and clean.
What Friends Say: Love it. Feels cozy and unique but it’s spacious and functional. There’s so much light! We use every inch of the space.
Biggest Embarrassment: A couple of our paint jobs – we are still working on the touch ups!
Proudest DIY: There’s a LOT of DIY going on in our apt, but we love to spray paint certain found objects with gold metallic paint.
Biggest Indulgence: Records, books, bed sheets, plants & succulents.
Best Advice: Buy things that last! Preferably made in America — hopefully one of a kind.
Dream Sources: B&B Italia, Bisazza. Espasso, anything Eames, a little antique shop we stumbled upon in Cartagena…
