I’m a designer by trade (The Directive Collective) and a being a collector is a hazard of the life. I’m always on the hunt for unique and interesting design artifacts for both professional and daily life inspiration.

I love this area and building so much that I’ve been here for more than 13 years. I moved into this unit (the largest in the building) from a smaller unit next door six years ago (see your previous Apartment Therapy feature: “Richard Takes Downtown“). Who knows where I’ll go from here?!

The building itself is more than 100 years old—it’s the former home to the Eureka Refrigerator Co. I have researched the building and company extensively and even found the great-great-great grandson of Wilbert Hooey who started the company in 1884.

I now live here with my fiancée, Nicole, and thankfully we agree 99% on our approach to home decor.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Keep at it. It’s a process. I’ve been collecting for almost 20 years and never feel it’s “done.” Good design takes time to find, time to put together, and should always been in flux.

What is your favorite room and why? It’s mostly really one big open-concept space, except for the bedroom, and that would be my favorite. It’s super private, hidden off the main area by a large sliding barn door, and it’s huge: 250 square feet.

Thanks to two original brick walls, the bedroom is very quiet and very dark. It’s super comfy, and has enough space for not only the bed, but a vintage floating Herman Miller Action Office filing cabinet/desk combo that provides a space for getting ready, and a set of gymnastics rings hanging from the 11′ ceilings to work out with.

Thanks, Richard and Nicole!
