I Asked ChatGPT How to Fake a Luxury Bedroom — Its Answer Costs Just $20

The hardest parts of decorating, as an amateur design enthusiast, are probably visualization and prioritization. It can be hard to “see” the vision for the final product, and consequently, to decide which projects to focus on first. So I’ll admit it: Sometimes I use AI in the design process to help kick off a project with suggestions or renderings. 

When I found myself recently itching for a change in my apartment, but unsure of where to start, I turned to ChatGPT. I wanted the space to feel more expensive — but without actually having to spend a fortune, of course. So I decided to put AI to the test and see if it could come up with a low-lift, low-budget solution. I uploaded photos of my bedroom to start, and asked it just one question: How can I make my rental look more luxurious? And I must admit, the results surprised me. 

The first round of recommendations were a bit too aspirational. ChatGPT suggested replacing my countertops, upgrading my floors, installing custom millwork, and swapping out light fixtures. Sure, those ideas would make my apartment look more expensive — but that’s because they were expensive. They would also require a renovation, which I’m not able to do as a renter. I realized I would need to be more clear with my phrasing.

So I tried again, this time with a much more realistic prompt. I asked for renter-friendly, affordable upgrades or swaps that I could actually make this weekend. Among the expected suggestions, like adding larger artwork or upgrading lampshades, one recommendation stood out due to how incredibly simple it was. ChatGPT told me I should start by ditching my mismatched plastic hangers, and replacing them with matching velvet ones. 

I often keep the closet door open, so although it may be a small change, this simple swap made the whole space feel a lot cleaner and chicer — without requiring me to change the way I use it. The best part? This is one of those rare upgrades that’s stylish, practical, and affordable. Now, my clothes stay put, my closet looks more refined, and my entire apartment gets a subtle — and surprisingly convincing — dose of quiet luxury. 

In the end, I’m glad I trusted ChatGPT’s recommendation! It’s easy to underestimate the power of visual consistency — especially in a closet. Even if your clothes are beautifully organized, using a bunch of mismatched hangers will create visual clutter and make the entire space feel chaotic. A cleaner, more uniform look really did make my closet feel more like a boutique than a storage space.
