Allison’s Silver Lake Charmer With a View
Name: Allison Pierce, Musician. (Shared w/ her roommate, Lizzy Sanford)
Location: Silver Lake; Los Angeles, California
Size: 2 Bedroom + 1 Bath
Years lived in: 2 years; Rented
When a few snapshots of Allison’s apartment landed in my inbox, I knew it was an incredible space. Overlooking Silver Lake, this two bedroom home has a wonderful, dreamy quality, and ample space to living comfortably. The huge vertical French door style windows, hardwood floors and eclectic furniture all exist harmoniously together.
Allison (half of the musical duo The Pierces) is a touring musician, so when she returns home she is lucky enough to relax in this charming abode. The lifestyle and culture of LA have definitely contributed to her own design aesthetic, especially the plants. “All the beautiful succulents that grow so easily here are a wonderful way to bring the feeling of California into your home,” she says. Her home is filled with great artwork, beautiful textiles, and a sense of great whimsy.
Everything flows from room to room with great ease, which was part of Allison’s goal in designing the home .”The most essential part to me is figuring out the flow of the apartment. Every space has a certain energy, and one must intuit the best use of it.” I noticed there were several great pieces of unique art, one of which she identified as the most significant thing in her home: “The pear painting that I got when I was in Istanbul. It was my first big art purchase, so it represents freedom and adulthood to me somehow.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Eclectic.
Inspiration: I adore Domino Magazine and was devastated when they stopped publishing. Very happy about their quarterly issue now, but I still dream of having it every month again. Elle Decor, Pinterest, Houzz, and Apartment Therapy are all amazing sources of inspiration. Also, my youngest sister, Louisa, who lives in Nashville, is an incredibly talented interior designer, and I am constantly inspired by her.
Favorite Element: My favorite elements are the two Turkish Kilim rugs that I got on Ebay for practically nothing, and the reclaimed wooden shelves in the kitchen. And teapots. I’m obsessed with teapots.
Biggest Challenge: Picking paint colors.
What Friends Say: The first thing everyone notices is the stunning view of the city and the giant palm tree in the back yard. I love that palm tree so much. It really has a lot of character. People also say that it feels “homey”, and I love to hear that. I want people to feel comfortable here.
Biggest Embarrassment: The built in shelves at the end of the hallway that have become a catch-all.
Biggest Indulgence: The mid century modern dining room table.
Best Advice: Test paint colors before you commit! And if you end up not liking it, FIX IT. You will look at those walls every day for years. Get it right. Color can bring such joy.
Dream Sources: ABC Carpet and Home in New York. What else do you need?
