The “Absolutely Gorgeous” Storage Bins That Instantly Decluttered My Entryway (They’re on Sale!)

I love living alone, but when you want to do that in New York City, you have to make a few concessions. Namely, to have the luxury of no roommates, you often have to make your peace with living in a shoebox of an apartment. I decided that it was worth it, and boy, am I glad I did. While downsizing has taken some getting used to, I’ve spent the last month figuring out how to make the most of every square inch of my studio. I’ve tackled every spot at this point, including my narrow entryway.

Right across from my front door, there’s a small corner that I decided to optimize with an IKEA shelving unit. Once it was assembled and the shelves were filled, something about it was nagging me. It just seemed a little too chaotic and cluttered for such a small space, especially when it’s in your face right as you open the front door. I spent a long while browsing through Amazon, searching for storage bins that were more stylish than standard folding cubes, but were still in my price range. I landed on this two-for-$35 deal, which looks tremendously sleeker than others at the same price point. The bin is made of Oxford fabric, which is a cotton blend that retains its shape and resists wrinkles, while a bamboo ring frames the top. The bamboo creates a handle on either side, making for easy transportation. When assembled — there are four support rods at each corner that keep the sides from falling down — each one measures roughly 18 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 12 inches tall.

I’m all about not sacrificing style for function when it comes to my home items. I will search relentlessly until I find something that delivers both, like this basket set. The design is simple, but more elevated than the typical folding cubes that I’m sure we’ve all owned at some point. The assembly was fairly painless; all it involves is securing the four support rods to the top of the frame with Velcro. It takes a bit of force and shoving, but it’s nothing too crazy. The result has been worth the effort. The tall sides conceal a surprising amount of clutter. One has become a makeshift toolbox, while the other has become an accessory bin.

The difference in my entryway was so immediately noticeable that I’m already planning on grabbing another set for the other shelves on my IKEA unit. I selected the beige version the first time, but I might go with black or gray to mix and match.
