It’s easy for a bed frame to be an afterthought compared with a mattress or sofa, so if you decide to spring for a high-quality, statement-making bed, then it’s best to really commit. After all, shouldn’t the spot you spend a third of your life in (!) be a little special?

One of the best places to shop for a showstopping bed is Arhaus, a luxury brand that specializes in timeless yet unique furniture for the whole home. We visited Arhaus as part of our Personal Shopper series, where we take trips to our favorite stores and do the browsing, fabric touching, and furniture comparing for you. We were able to see four of Arhaus’ best-selling beds on this trip, including one that our editor-in-chief loved so much she had to have it for herself.

Why Arhaus?

Arhaus is a high-end retailer that is known for its artisan, global-inspired designs and sustainable manufacturing practices. Its pricing is on the high end compared with other popular furniture brands (like West Elm and Pottery Barn), but most of its furniture pieces are customizable and made-to-order, so you’re not getting anything that’s been mass-produced. It’s an editor and designer favorite, and you can rest assured that you’re getting great quality when you shop there.

Arhaus is most known for its seating, but its other furniture options are worth checking out, too. In particular, its bed frames are unlike others you’ll find on the market, with modern silhouettes, customizable headboard styles, and elegant detailing. If you’re looking for a true statement for your bedroom, Arhaus is hard to beat.

The Criteria

We judged every Arhaus bed frame based on the following criteria:

  • Customizability: Does it come in different varieties? How many colors, finishes, materials, or sizes is it available in? How granular can you get when customizing the bed frame? Does it require a box spring?
  • Space needs: How much space does the bed frame require? Does it have a canopy or an extra-wide frame? Is it particularly bulky or does it stay close to its appointed mattress size?
  • Platform height: How high off of the ground is the bed frame? Would it generally require bending down or reaching up to get into?
  • Storage capacity: Does the bed frame include drawers? Does it have space underneath for under-bed storage? Does its headboard have storage capacity?
  • Appearance: What style of decor does the bed frame suit best? Does its design lean warm and rustic or sleek and modern? Is it classic with upholstery and detailing or contemporary with clean lines and versatile minimalism?
  • Sturdiness: Is the frame made from durable, high-quality materials? Does the bed wobble or creak when you’re on it?
  • Assembly: Does the bed require tools for assembly? Can it be taken apart and put back together fairly easily?

Every Editor-Tested Bed at Arhaus

Most Versatile: Wyller Bed

What we love

  • Impressive number of headboard customizations
  • Elegant, versatile look

Good to know

  • Only available in three fabrics

Charli & Danielle’s thoughts: The Wyller is Arhaus’ top-selling bed, which is no surprise considering the versatile, classic design and range of headboard customizations. Being able to choose among three headboard heights is unusual enough, but the Wyller also comes in four different headboard styles (classic, channel stitched, box tufted, and extended). The bed we saw in the store had the classic, 52-inch headboard, which looked clean and elegant.

We also got to see the most popular choice for the Wyller: Tania cashmere. It’s a fade-resistant, durable performance fabric that has a textured weave and rich coloring — perfect if you’re going for a classic, sophisticated vibe. Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of fabric customizations, and you only have two other choices if you’re not a fan of the Tania cashmere.

Depending on the headboard style you choose, the Wyller can make quite a bold statement. Even though it’s not exactly imposing, it still feels like it fills up the room, especially if you opt for a taller height or extended headboard. If you want a regal bed that will anchor your space, you really can’t do better.

Best for Small Spaces: Calista Bed

What we love

  • Combination of wood and upholstery
  • Room for storage underneath
  • Airy, compact design is good for tight spaces

Good to know

  • Not many customizations available

Charli & Danielle’s thoughts: The Calista bed is another bestseller, thanks to its mixed-material design and visually lighter appearance. With 6 inches of underbed clearance, it has an airier feel compared with lower profile beds, and has plenty of room for shallow storage bins. That feature, plus the compact size of the frame, makes this bed ideal for smaller bedrooms where every inch counts. It’s no surprise then that the Arhaus sales associate we talked to said that the Calista is a popular choice for kids rooms and guest bedrooms.

This bed comes in two wood finishes: a lighter sand (which we saw in the store) and a darker cocoa. Both are good options, and the choice comes down to personal style. The sand is a bit more contemporary, while the cocoa is classic and more mature. The combination of the wood frame with the upholstered headboard creates a stylish balance, especially because there are only lighter neutral fabric colors available. If you prefer an all-wood look, that option is available — but only in the sand finish.

Best Contemporary: Adalynn Bed

What we love

  • Modern, curved design
  • Sheltered headboard creates a cozy vibe

Good to know

  • No headboard customizations
  • Low profile might not appeal to everyone

Charli & Danielle’s thoughts: The Adalynn is one of Arhaus’ most popular platform beds, and it has a decidedly more modern appearance compared with the classic styles that are typical of Arhaus. It has a stylish low profile, rounded corners, and a sheltered headboard, all of which create a sculptural, subtly “sexy” look. According to the Arhaus associate we talked to, the Adalynn has fans across age demographics, despite the more modern aesthetic.

It has the lowest headboard of all the beds we saw, and there are no options to customize, although you can opt for a higher footboard for a modern sleigh bed style. We think the height makes sense for the low profile look, but it’s not ideal if you’re someone who likes to pile on the pillows.

  • Styles: Also available in leather and with a high footboard
  • Sizes: Queen, king, California king
  • Headboard Height: 42 inches
  • Underbed Clearance: 0 inches

  • Box Spring: Not recommended

Sleekest: Malone Upholstered Bed

What we love

  • Mixed material look
  • Sleek, versatile design

Good to know

  • Only one upholstery option

Charli & Danielle’s thoughts: If you prefer a sleeker look, you’ll probably love the Malone, which combines a wood headboard with a metal frame for a transitional style. The channel tufting adds some extra detail to the headboard, giving it more of a luxurious vibe. The result is super versatile, and we could see this bed working in a lot of different spaces depending on the finish you choose.

While there’s only one upholstery option available (a neutral cream), you do get to choose among three metallic finishes for the legs and frame. The model we saw had the “bone” finish, which consisted of oak wood detailing around the headboard and a dark metallic base. If you prefer a darker, more contemporary look, there are two darker wood options available as well — one with a gold metallic base and one with black.
