My All-Time Favorite Living Room Sofa Now Can Transform into a Bed
When I moved to the suburbs, I knew all of my apartment furniture wouldn’t magically just fit into my new rooms. I figured certain pieces might need to be repurposed, and I’d size up with other items to better fit the spaces. What I didn’t anticipate, though, was that my beloved Article Sven Sofa — which I styled as a “sectional” using the matching ottoman — would be too big for my suburban home.
But my current living room layout calls for floating the sofa in the middle of the space, facing the rooms’ natural focal point: a fireplace and wall of built-ins. Turns out that spot’s smack in between the radiator and a console table, and the generous 88-inch-wide Sven was about 15 inches too big to be able to walk from one side of the room to another without shimmying and squeezing past it.
I loved this sofa so much that I couldn’t wrap my head around parting with it. It’s a best-seller that’s all over social media and in many other people’s homes, and that’s for good reason. The leather truly patinas so nicely, and the overstuffed back cushions and tufted single seat cushion are super-comfy, high-end touches you don’t always see at this price point. While it’s definitely mid-century-inspired, Sven’s not out of place in a home that’s a little bit older, either. So I did what any other desperate Sven-lover might do: I sized down to the 72-inch loveseat version, and all was right in my living room again.
Just last week, though, when I thought Sven couldn’t get any better (and that I had found my forever sofa), Article dropped the Sven Sofa Bed. This design essentially looks the same as its predecessors with its bolsters and cushions, only instead of exposed wooden pin legs, the sleeper Sven sits flush to the ground. That’s because it’s supporting a hidden bed; all you have to do is grab the two handles on the backside of the seat cushion and pull the mattress out for a seamless transition.
This piece essentially turns your living room into a makeshift guest room, which is extra handy in a very small space (but helpful in any setting, really). And did I mention this sofa still starts at $1,599? That’s a ton of function for under $2K, and it’s set to be in stock in many colors, too, for quick shipping.
Right now, the Sven Sofa Bed only comes in the 88-inch size in velvet and fabric materials (including brand-new colorways of each), but you better believe I’m patiently waiting to see if the loveseat size becomes available. I might even stray from the buttery leather upholstery I’ve now ordered twice just to eke out a bit more functionality in one of my favorite pieces ever.
