Attics are often underutilized, serving as additional storage space for old photo albums and broken furniture. At times, they’re not even used at all, left to gather dust and cobwebs, not to mention the occasional scary story.

But with their unique location, angled ceilings, and tiny windows, attics can be quite charming, and would make for a neat bedroom. Here are some whimsical attic conversions (and tips!) that just might convince you to start moving up.

The easiest way to make an attic appear more spacious is to paint it white. The color will not only reflect natural light but also keep the angled ceilings from looking like the dark and gloomy walls of a cave.

If you don’t want the room to look too cold with the white paint, you can opt for natural wood. It achieves the same effect, but at the same time, lends the space some much-needed warmth.

You can also add touches of color to make it pop.

Most attics don’t have this much natural light, so it’s best to position your bed nearest to the window. Don’t be afraid to bask in the sun!

Adding lamps can not only add light to the room but can also give it charm.

Make Marie Kondo proud by decluttering your attic. Leaving only the essentials will not only spark joy but also make the space seem more spacious.

But then again, sometimes adding more stuff works out too, giving an otherwise dull room some character.

And speaking of character, why not add texture with textiles?

Another trick to make the attic appear roomier is to simply install mirrors.

Attics come in different shapes and sizes. Before going all-out in your renovation, taken into account every nook, cranny, and odd angle, then assess the space. Ask yourself what design will meet your needs and maximize your attic’s potential.

As with other rooms in your apartment, you can add indoor plants to improve the mood (just try your best not to kill them).

Attics would make for excellent children’s bedrooms. It’s just like sleeping in an oversized play tent!
