The idea was to imagine a seriously wired home, on in which technology was seamlessly integrated into every room in the house.

Name: JacquelynLocation: Financial District — Manhattan, New YorkSize: 712 square feet — one bedroomYears lived in: 1 month Jacquelyn’s goal for the design of this apartment was to infuse it with glamour — a home and a “life filled with beautiful objects, imbued with femininity and opulence.

Name: LauraLocation: Financial District — Manhattan, New YorkSize: 693 square feet — one bedroomYears lived in: 1 month While the Financial District can often seem dark and ominous — especially this time of year — Laura managed to foster a bright and uplifting aura in her home. The colors are cheerful. The design lines are crisp and meticulous. It’s a totally cute place!

Name: Sharon, Chris, Julian and Larry (the dog)Location: Greenwich VillageSize: 1080 square foot 2-bedroom coopYears lived in: 1 Sharon is a fashion designer and her husband Chris is a developer and contractor. So, she wanted to go for a completely individualized look and he wanted to ensure re-sale potential. The result is great bones, and solid materials, with the most gorgeous and romantic flourishes.

Name: Kate & CameronLocation: Carroll Gardens — Brooklyn, New YorkSize: 850 square feet — 1 bedroomYears lived in: 10 months Kate and Cameron are very in sync when it comes to style. They married a year ago, and moved into this great apartment soon thereafter. Buying furniture was easy as they both knew they wanted simple and efficient pieces.

Name: LJ, Elena and Teo Location: Downtown Brooklyn Size: 550 square feet studio Years lived in: 5 years Long-time Apartment Therapy fans may recall LJ’s impressive work in progress! Well, LJ finally finished and it looks incredible! This home is a labor of love and sweat. LJ, an architect, built almost everything you see! Major elements that he didn’t build with his own two hands were often salvaged from other people’s architectural projects.

Name: Dale & Adam — Dale’s firm is DRD Studio (website underway)Location: Chelsea — NYCSize: 1,070 square feet — 2 bedroom duplex Years lived in: 7 years Five years ago, I had the pleasure of documenting Dale and Adam’s home for a pioneering Apartment Therapy House Tour! Since then, they’ve had a few changes: a new kitchen, new half-bath, and twins! Dale is an architect so all the designs for the renovations over the years were home made.

Name: Debbie MillmanLocation: ChelseaSize: 1,600 square feet — 2 bedroom with backyardYears lived in: 16 Debbie was in the mood for a change but wasn’t sure how to go about it. As Debbie recalls, Susan replied, “Well, if we are going to get new furniture, maybe we should get new floors, and if we get new floors maybe we should get…an entire new everything!” When Debbie asked what she should do with all her old furniture, Susan replied, “Curbside!

Name: PatriciaLocation: Greenwich VillageSize: 2,000 square feet loft — 1bedroom Years lived in: 2½ Patricia thought all those new, crisp white condos going up all over the city would go poorly with her and her husband’s female artist dominated impressionist paintings. So, they searched for an apartment that was all on one floor and had a significant history.

Name: Bob and Courtney NovogratzLocation: West VillageSize: 6000 square feetYears lived in: 1 Bob and Cortney were lay architects and interior designers for years out of necessity. They kept buying abandoned lots in marginal neighborhoods and turning them into incredible homes. And in order to keep costs down, they figured out how to do nearly every aspect of the project themselves. It was DIY on a massive scale.

Location: West VillageSize: 300 square feet studioYears lived in: 3 He knew he wanted sleek lines, a floor with character, a few white walls for his art, and as much open space as a 300 square foot floor plan could provide. Lastly, the owner likes to cook but was non-negotiable on a kitchen that encroached on his living space — at all!So, the architects and the contractor worked very hard to make use of every square inch that wasn’t active floor area.

Name: Lauren Location: Upper West Side, Manhattan Size: 800 square feet studio rental converted to a temporary one-bedroom Years lived in: Less than a year After a couple of years of ‘roommating’ in New York City, Lauren leaped out on her own and rented a studio apartment. Fortunately, it was large enough to put up some temporary walls and create a generous looking one-bedroom. Within a couple of months, it looked like it had been lived in for years! Lauren is a talented designer.

Name: NellieLocation: West VillageSize: 500 square feet, 2-bedroomYears lived in: 11 years After 10 years of tolerating its propensity to accumulate clutter and never seem to have room for anything, Nellie wanted her home to change, noticeably. She got in touch with Azadeh and Kermit, made her style known, expressed her desire for a coat closet, and an open kitchen, among many other things, and then moved to a sublet in Brooklyn for six months.

Name: Isabella & JayLocation: Inwood, New York CitySize: 850 square feetYears lived in: 1½ years Inspired by a trip to the Mediterranean Sea, Isabella painted the bedroom ceiling a deep azure blue and lined the living room windows in a bright playful yellow. Isabella’s intent was to harness the flood of sunlight that fills the apartment every day and convey the impression of being on vacation all the time!

Name: MichelleLocation: Greenwich Village, New York CitySize: 950 square feetYears lived in: 4 years “I love the play between symmetry and asymmetry,” says Michelle. “I tend to prefer the contrast that comes out of the mix of balance and unbalance.” So, when I absent-mindedly started to straighten the stereo on the bureau in the dining room before taking a photo, Michelle explained that she wasn’t too fond of right angles.

Name:Tom and JustinLocation: Brooklyn HeightsSize: 1-bdrm, 410 sqft. co-op in a 1918 landmark apartment buildingYears lived in: 6 months >> This is Tom’s first owned home and first renovation. An art dealer, Tom is confident of his tastes and preferences, but never had to think about sink faucets and custom cabinetry configurations before.

Name: MargaretLocation: Fort Greene, BrooklynSize: 775 sqft. 3-room rentalYears lived in: less than 1 year >> Last time we met Margaret, she was unpacking. Since that house tour, Margaret has worked hard and it shows! She painted and purged, found a place for all her things, bought and installed strategic lighting, and rearranged to make the best use of a somewhat unusual layout.

We last visited her in her former shrine to utilitarian yet soothing living a couple of years ago. Since then, she was forced to relocate to a smaller home that was in much worse condition upon arrival. Laura did not despair. In fact, she took on the challenge with gusto.
