Before and After: This Bathroom Just Got a Mind-Bending Paint Job
This bathroom was pretty nice, with a pleasantly neutral palette, big windows, and all the fixtures and finishes appearing to be in fine shape. But now, thanks to a mind-bending paint job, it is bright, poppy, bold, and fantastically fun.
The tile, toilet, and tub are the same (at least so far), but the wall and floor have a dramatically different look. Sarah of The Surznick Common Room—@sawissinger on Instagram went big and bold with this affordable bathroom makeover, keeping all the basics intact and giving the floor, walls, and lights a major upgrade.
This all pretty standard—nothing thrilling, but the perfect blank slate on which Sarah can work some magic.
Although the new floor looks like high-end geometric tile, it is actually the same tile as before, painted by hand. Sarah used Young House Love’s floor-painting tutorial to achieve this fabulously surreal look, inspired by Jenny Komenda of Juniper Studio’s patio floor. This is a much more intense and vibrant take on that look, with an all-over pattern and a fantastic color scheme that’s simply perfection. The optical illusion is fascinating, and the geometry that creates it is simply good design.
The old mirror-light combo was definitely trying for some kind of look, but it definitely wasn’t going to work with the new jazzy modern floor. Perhaps the most appealing thing in this photo is that classic white square tile, which almost always looks great.
The new plank wall is such a treat. The dark paint is nicely dramatic, and the long subtle stripes elongate the room. The deep gray—like that on the floor—shows off the pink and gold paints to their best effect. The sconce is glamorous and unique, a graceful brass take on the typical vanity lighting. The black mirror fits right in with its clean lines, and the slender shelf offers a spot for both essentials and decorative accessories.
The wall paint is Liquid Mercury by BEHR, and the light is a Constellation Sconce by Illuminate Vintage on Etsy.
And while this bathroom now looks amazing, Sarah says there are even more improvements still to come: “painting the tile and tub, new vanity, new faucets, pretty art, and hopefully more cute plants.” So stay tuned!
Thank you, Sarah!
