This Bathroom Went from “Boring Beige” to “Pretty and Pink-ified” in a $1,300 Makeover
Whether you’re actively shopping for home makeover materials or not, chances are there’s a piece of decor or furniture that has caught your eye that you can’t stop thinking about. For DIYer Cindi Yang (@cindiyang), it was a vibrant pink wallpaper.
“I wanted to add a bit more personality to this guest bathroom and had my eye on this pink wallpaper for years,” she says. “I had to try it out in this space,” she wrote on Instagram in a post about her bathroom transformation. But more on the “after” later. As for the before, it was “really boring, beige, and brown” and lacked any personality, Cindi says.
“I wanted to make a change because I really like my space to feel personalized,” she says “I don’t feel great if my space doesn’t reflect my personality. It feels like I’m living in someone else’s space otherwise.”
Yang was a fan of some of the existing bathroom features, like the layout, vanity, and windows. However, she wasn’t too keen on the light fixtures, mirror, and “cheap” vinyl flooring. She also ripped out and replaced the old toilet — an easier task than expected.
Dramatic black tile replaces the old white floors.
“The most labor-intensive and time-consuming part was ripping out the old flooring and tiling the floor with matte porcelain tile,” Cindi says. “That made a big difference in the space alone, and the tile I chose really modernized it.”
It was Cindi’s first time tiling and, although it came out wonderfully, she wasn’t expecting just how much of a messy, long process it was going to be. “There’s more prep, steps, labor, and dry time in between required than I expected,” she explained. “At the same time, since mortar is involved, I had to race against the clock as well while trying to be very precise. Tiling was the most stressful part for sure.”
The vanity is the same as before — just painted.
For the vanity, rather than replacing it, Cindi opted for a lick of paint to bring it back into the 21st century. She used STAINMASTER Paint in the shade Raven for a sleek and sophisticated finish.
Additionally, switching out the drawer pulls for gold-toned pulls gave the vanity’s storage a new lease on life. A larger mirror with a less-chunky frame and a new light fixture also modernize this corner of the bathroom. “The mirror size fits the space better, and the gold really brings it some shine and personality,” Cindi says.
A spray-and-stick wallpaper adds bold color.
Of course, arguably the most standout feature of the new bathroom is the pink pre-pasted wallpaper. “It went from brown to pretty and pink-ified,” Cindi says of the space. “The pattern really makes the space a lot bolder, yet still pulled back.”
She is thrilled with how the space turned out, especially given her budget. The whole makeover cost $1,300!
“I love how the space makes me feel now,” Cindi says. It feels good to be in there and get ready in there. It feels cozy, pretty, and personalized.”
