If you’re itching for a primary bedroom makeover, there’s a professional home stager-approved item that’s a total game changer and worth the investment. Not only will it bring you comfort, but it can also dramatically change the vibe of your bedroom and could be a long-lasting purchase. What I’m talking about is actually the basis of a well-appointed, cozy bedroom.

What is it, you ask? In the second episode of Apartment Therapy’s Styled to Sell series, professional stager Jason Saft says the best purchase you can make for your primary bedroom is a high-quality, good-looking rug.

The One Bedroom Splurge You Need Is a Nice Rug

“So, this is interesting, especially for people with kids and pets, the primary bedroom, I think, is a place where you invest in a really nice rug,” Saft explains in the second episode. “I’m a strict no-shoes household, and I love where you step out of bed and you have this beautiful, plush, thick, wool rug, and your feet hit it in the morning and it’s just like, ‘Oh, this feels good.’”

A high-quality rug, while usually on the pricier side, is a great investment because often they’re made of wool (which means they’re durable). Bedrooms aren’t necessarily high-traffic areas, so you don’t have to worry too much about the rug getting damaged like you would in a communal area.

The Right Rug Will Fit Your Bed Properly

While the first step is simply beginning your rug search, along the way you’ll want to make sure you’re picking something that’s the right size for anchoring the bed. If you have a king-size bed, it’s best to choose a large, 9’x12′ rug to make sure that your bed is actually surrounded by that plushness. That said, a rug doesn’t necessarily have to go directly underneath the bed. If budget doesn’t allow for a big rug, opt for a smaller one and put it on one side of the bed.

“I think a beautiful rug is really imperative,” Saft said in the video. A bedroom should be a calming retreat, and having something soft underfoot definitely contributes to that environment. So if you’re going to make a long-lasting bedroom splurge, opt for a gorgeous rug.
