We often extol the virtues of creating a nursery that will grow with your child and we still believe that. But if you find design and decorating fun, maybe you are looking forward to updating the nursery to a “big kid” room. Reader Laura felt it was time to go from “the land of the dinosaurs” to “swimming with the fishes” in her son’s new, nautical bedroom.

The built-ins make a HUGE difference and the nod to the sea and pirates is subtle and sophisticated. Here’s what Laura had to say about this project:

My son was fast out growing his nursery styled room. I stumbled upon some great bedding which became my whole inspiration for the room makeover.
I first built some built-in bookcases by using standard kitchen cabinets as my base. I also added a plank wall to the other side of the room to give a nice focal point. Then it was time for paint and accessories. I built some bookends, two PB Kids utility boards and added a real fish to complete the Nautical/Pirate theme. This room is now my favorite spot in the house!
Great job! Readers, you can see more of this room on Laura’s blog

Thanks Laura!
