Step-by-Step: A Closet Makeover Fit For an Instagram Star
Kate Rumson is the founder of the The Real Houses of IG Instagram account (1.5 million followers and counting). In between running the account and her business, The Real Houses, Kate’s also been in the process of updating her New Jersey home to fit her simple-yet-luxe aesthetic.
The first order of business: Tackling the bedroom. Specifically, the closet. Kate was lucky enough to have a huge closet space, but it didn’t offer much in the way of storage or style. Kate started by stripping the beige carpet and repainting the space:
She also added black plank flooring, which will stylishly counter the light color palette she planned for this space.
Once the flooring was installed, Kate started adding the organizational pieces that will maximize storage. These will be the foundation for shelving and drawers.
In went the drawers, also in a fresh white hue with a clean-lined look.
Crown molding eases the transition between the top of each unit to the ceiling and adds a stately look. Closet bars and shelves completed the organizational elements, then Kate decorated with a chandelier and drapes.
AFTER
The drapes are the sole element of color in the closet, but the light blue hue does catch the eye. A small desk offers a surface for placing accessories, while an ottoman makes a comfortable place to rest.
Subdivided trays help keep jewelry organized and easy to view. (It’s so much easier to plan your accessories when you can see everything at once.)
Open shelves are ideal for her extensive shoe and purse collections. Kate also uses the shelving to house decor from elsewhere in her home as well. “I combined both storage for my clothes and my home accessories in this closet filling those top, hard to reach shelves with my home accessories — I’ve collected a ton of accessories over the years,” she says. “This allowed me to free up space in other closets in my home and provide visual interest in my brand new walk-in closet by displaying some of my pretty vases, jars and jewelry boxes instead of keeping them hidden and taking too much storage space everywhere else.”
Though it is a closet spacious enough to inspire a million dreams, it is well-suited for a style star. To see more of Kate’s favorite spaces, follow Kate Rumson and The Real Houses of IG on Instagram.
