Behr’s 2027 Color of the Year Is Basically a Walk in the Woods for Your Walls

From the rise of biophilic design to the continued popularity of earth tones, nature is showing no signs of slowing down as one of the biggest inspirations in home decor. These days, though, palettes are warming up; people are craving the comforting, cozy side of nature versus its breezier elements. 

Always a leader in color trends, it’s maybe no surprise, then, that Behr Paint Company has announced Grounded (T27-01) as the pick for its 2027 Color of the Year (COTY). A sophisticated olive green with brown undertones, Grounded embodies the restorative essence of spending time outdoors with that little bit of intrigue and edge many people associate with the forest or woods.

Part olive, part moss, Grounded speaks to the popularity the green color family has had over the past few years (Behr actually named Hidden Gem, a gorgeous jade, its 2026 Color of the Year). The shade is meant to help people bring a rooted authenticity back into their homes. 

“Moss really brings the vitality to the color, while olive brings the warmth,” says Kayla Kratz, head of color at Behr. “It’s not overly botanical or dark. It feels like that subtle breath of cool air when you’re under a tree canopy.”

Now in its tenth year of selecting annual shades, Behr has further solidified its position as a color authority with Grounded, a hue that speaks to people’s current search for stability and respite at home. “It’s really rooted in renewal,” says Kratz. “It’s a color that brings tactility to a space.” 

In addition to traveling globally to track trends in fashion, interiors, automotive, and beyond, Behr commissioned its own study of around 1,000 consumers, which also helped to inform this year’s shade selection. That survey revealed that 77% of Americans say they turn to nature when life feels chaotic. Grounded is designed to bridge the gap between people’s increasingly busy lives and the restorative power of nature, bringing that feeling of calm and connection into the home.

At the press preview reveal of Grounded, editors and content creators saw several examples of the shade used in pretty home vignettes. The highlight? The shade is the definition of versatile. It transitions beautifully between modern and traditional — and between interior and exterior. “We’re really excited Grounded can be used so easily throughout your interior and exterior,” says Anna Miller, director of trend and design at The Home Depot, Behr’s exclusive paint partner. “We’ve seen the farmhouse aesthetic — white with dark windows. And so bringing Grounded in, it can either be the contrast, like paint your windows, the sash, the frame, that color. Or it’s all over, like the siding, and then it blends with the landscape beautifully.”

As far as interiors go, the shade is lovely as an accent to neutral furniture in a living room. It also creates an enveloping, tranquil feeling in a bedroom — or a pretty pop of color as kitchen cabinetry. One of the on-site vignettes featured the color in a “bantry,” or bar pantry, which also speaks to the trend of homeowners taking on smaller DIY projects in utilitarian spaces with bolder hues. “It’s still introducing color to the space, but it’s a specific nuance of green that plays really well with different wood tones,” says Kratz. “And with metals, gold and brass brings out the warmth, while you can use chrome to make a modern interpretation of the color.” 

If it sounds like Grounded plays well with all types of styles, other shades, and materials, well, that’s kind of the case. It’s particularly suited, though, to the entire 2027 palette that Behr also just released, which features a very deliberate mix of warm and cool tones. “We’ve just loved the exciting interplay of cool and warm going on,” says Miller. “Like the return of combinations like Denim Light (PPU-1415) with Ancient Root (PPU-420) — or Smokey Claret (HDC-AC-28) and Grounded.”
