Picking a paint color and not sure where to start? If you have a soothing, but not sleepy pale tone in mind, here are some terrific choices all pulled from the Glidden palette and, best of all, featured in real homes. Take a look…

Glidden’s Misty Moonstone (#GLN34-01E), above, is as pale as blue can possibly be without just being white with blue undertones.

Nearly every time I saw a room painted in a prettily pale Glidden paint, it turned out to be Smooth Stone (50YY 63/041). Here it is in an elegant yet playful dining room…

…and here it is in an elegant yet playful bedroom. I’ve seen this color used with such a wide range of decors, furnishings, and accessories, and it always looks elegant.

Glistening Moonlight (#GLC25-01E) is a gorgeously pale blue that brightens up this basement studio, without feeling chilly.

There’s some confusion regarding this color: Centsational Girl’s paint was labeled Oyster Bay (Glidden #90YY 63/044, Home Depot #A1885), but Glidden uses that number for Polished Limestone (#GLN30-01F at Home Depot). Whatever you call it, this paint is an upscale grey with green undertones.

Dusty Miller (#GLN38) is a classic grey-grey, the perfect backdrop for a lively collection of art and antiques.

If you believe in calming colors in the boudoir, Misty China Rain (30GY 73/053) is the most soothing grey-green around.

Natural Linen (40YY 60/103) is a sophisticated hue that’s a far cry from the ubiquitous Rental Beige.

After seeing this living room, I want to paint all of my ceilings Cloud Nine (30BG 72/034), which manages to be pale, pale blue without being at all pastel.

Slate Green (#GLN37) is the darkest paint you’ll find in this roundup, but it’s definitely still a pale- and fascinating- green-grey.

And on the opposite end of things we have our lightest contender, Dove White (10BB 83/020), which manages to remain interesting despite being ever-so-pale. In the words of Kelsey of Snappy Casual, whose entire house is painted in the color, “Dove White is a calm, blueish white. I love that it looks white in full light and looks grayish when the lights are off.”
