Innovations in laundry move slowly. The first commercially-available laundry detergent — a powdered soap called Persil, which is still sold today — launched in 1907, then people waited nearly 50 years before liquid detergent was invented. It was another 50 years before liquid pods came about, and more recently laundry detergent has taken its latest (and possibly final?) form: laundry sheets.

What Are Laundry Sheets?

Like pods, laundry detergent sheets are a super convenient approach to the age-old problem of having to scoop or pour detergent from a big, heavy container. They also don’t require you to do any messy measuring (which we love). But unlike pods, these are much easier to travel with and have zero risk of causing a mess — after all, you can’t accidentally pop a square of dried soap!

We rounded up the best laundry detergent sheets available and tried some ourselves to see just how well they work. Check out our picks and learn why these may replace your liquid detergent forever.

Made in Sweden, Spot's laundry sheets use a plant-based formula that's paraben and 1-dioxane free and safe for babies and people with sensitive skin. But that doesn't mean it plays nice with dirt. The quick-dissolve sheets work in any temperature to fight stains and will work in any kind of washer, from fancy, brand-new HE washers to the dinosaurs at the laundromat. You can even use them for sink washing.

Earth Breeze
$24.95

If you want to save money in the long run, try using Earth Breeze's subscription service, which keeps you well-stocked with their vegan laundry detergent sheets at a 40 percent discount from the regular price. For our senior commerce editor Alicia, these sheets have changed the way she thinks about laundry products altogether. "I had never tried laundry sheets before, but EarthBreeze's thoroughly impressed me," Alicia says. "They're gentler on my clothes than liquid laundry detergent. My clothes had been feeling too starchy and now they're back to being soft. I also love that this is a more eco-friendly solution and I don't have to deal with messy liquid detergent."

We like that Tru Earth gives you scent options with their laundry detergent sheets. Choose either Fresh Linen or Lilac Breeze, or opt for fragrance-free sheets that leave your clothes smelling like nothing except clean. Our Best List editor Britt tried them and appreciated the minimal packaging, as well as how great they work. "The detergent itself cleans just as well as liquid detergent without the mess," Britt says. "It's super convenient and effective, and has been one of my go-to's as of late!"

One reason we like these laundry detergent sheets is that they're easy to tear in half, so if you're washing a small load of clothes and don't need to use a full sheet, you can just fold and rip one in two. The soap used in these sheets was designed for people with sensitive skin, which makes them a great choice for families that either have children or elderly adults.
