I Know a Place: Where to Get the Best Removable Wallpapers

I Know a Place: Where to Get the Best Removable Wallpapers

Renters have spoken: removable wallpaper is one of the best, most inclusive inventions we've ever been handed. We can now let our freak flag fly and cover our bathroom floor to ceiling in skulls and flowers, remove it, and happily walk away five years later with our security deposit in hand, our landlord never the wiser.

And removable wallpaper isn't just for walls anymore. DIYers and crafters alike hopped on the "temporary" train and have been covering all sorts of furniture and home wares with this newfound medium. We're the same group that decoupaged our fifth grade desks with magazine cut outs and wrapping paper, but given these fancy new, high quality removable papers, we've stepped up our game.

Generally speaking, unless you purchase a small sample (around $5 for an 8.5" x 11" sheet) a roll, or a standard sheet (2' x 4') of removable wallpaper will typically cost you $30-$50. So yes, it's a bit of a splurge if you're covering something mundane like file folders, or using it as a drawer liner that no one else sees, but definitely worth the spend if you're using it to enhance a piece of furniture or a DIY project that would otherwise fade into the background. Here are some of our favorite affordable sources:

Best Sources for Standout Project Paper

  • Walls Need Love: According to the websites homepage, "This is not your grandmother's paper". They do have quite the selection, ranging from weird and eclectic to absolutely normal, pretty neutrals. It's adhesive backed, sticks smooth, and removes clean. The paper comes in three different lengths, starting at 2' x 4', which sells for $48. Samples available for $4 each.
  • Kate Zaremba Company: Super funky designs that can be ordered in various sizes starting at 2' x 4' lengths for $36, increasing in price by $9/foot. Since you're ordering specific sizes there is a 1-2 week turnaround time, which might be a bummer considering how quickly you want to get to work on your project. The upside: ordering longer lengths of paper means less tiles you'll have to tediously piece together. Samples available for $5 each.
  • Chasing Paper: This site has a ton of paper, and it's all organized by color which is highly satisfying when you don't know exactly what you want, but are leaning towards a specific color scheme. The sheets come in 2' x 4' lengths that are $40 each. Samples available for $5 each.
  • Spoonflower: You're going to want to make this your fist stop if you need a very specific amount of paper and are wanting to stick to a strict budget. Here's why: Spoonflower makes ordering easy-peasy. First, you pick your design, then you choose whether you want water-activated (removable) or peel and stick (removable, repositionable), then you choose the size—custom, or standard—and that's about it. The selection and price can't be beat. Choose from more than 650,000 designs and pay $30 for a 2' x 4' sheet. (2' x 1' samples available for $7.50 each)
  • Etsy: Etsy is a fantastic resource for removable wallpaper, specifically Livettes shop (this paper is currently in my shopping cart...) just be sure to select "removable" wallpaper from the dropdown tab when ordering because some shops offer both traditional, and temporary papers. Almost all offer samples, Livettes start at $10 each.
  • Jumanji: Another Etsy seller, but deserves a spot on their own because they are your one stop source for ALL THINGS BOTANICAL. A roll will run you approximately $37.00 for a 20.7" x 48". Steeper than the average roll, but so lush and green and in my opinion, worth it. One of my favorite features from this seller is that you can order 3 different 8" x 10" samples for just $10. Perfect for small DIY projects!
  • Timothy Sue: These designs are so. dreamy. They come in a tad pricier than our other offerings, but the 8.5" x 11" samples are crazy affordable at just $6 a pop. Go check out the site and try to constrain yourself. Probably not gonna happen.
  • Target : Hold on to your hats, folks, Target.com actually offers some pretty great options for removable wallpaper. The 'kids' Tempaper is more of a border (6" x 15'), priced at $19.99, and would be the perfect size if you're looking to spruce up your staircase kick-plates (See more at Tempaper's website). They also sell a long and narrow black stripe that comes in a 4.1" x 20' length for $12.99. The best bang for your buck are the Devine Color rolls (approx. 20.5" x 16') ranging from $29.99-$34.99.
  • Jo-Ann Fabrics: Again, with the big box stores! Jo-Ann has a nice selection of adhesive paper, and it looks like they stay on sale permanently, which means you can't use your fantastic 40% off coupon, but hey, it's still under $40 for a 20.5" x 18' roll.
  • Urban Outfitters: $40 seems to be the magic number for a 2' x 4' roll. UO has a small selection of removable, project-size rolls that fit in line price wise with most other websites offerings.
  • Amazon: Last but not least, Amazon. It's kind of a crap shoot when you go poking around for 'removable wallpaper,' but if you know specifically what you're looking for, you're bound to find a good deal. This removable chalkboard paper is easy on the pocket book at $10.95 with free-shipping for Prime members (who isn't a Prime member these days?).
