Colorful living room with a decorated Christmas tree, green sofa, vibrant artwork, and a sunburst mirror.

In my 30s, I’ve accepted that some people just aren’t for me. At the top of that list are those who reject multicolored Christmas lights. To me, that means they dismiss whimsy and the kind of Amy Sedaris-vintage kookiness that makes holidays fun. I love old-school holiday decorations, which usually means something ceramic or made of tinsel. Here are 17 retro-kitsch items from West Elm, Wayfair, and more that will make your holiday guests think they’ve time-jumped to holidays of decades past.

C7 LED Vintage Christmas Lights
$30$27

Multicolored lights say, “Look at me; the holidays at my house are the opposite of a bummer.” Who needs elegant and understated boring white lights when you can have a “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” kind of vibe all season long?

Retro Dancing Christmas Santa
$25$17

Nothing says throwback like a dancing Santa in a vintage pastel. Set him on a shelf to remind people that you don’t take the holidays too seriously — or snag this ornament version for your tree.

Wondershop Tinsel Garland with Merry Christmas
$20

It wouldn’t be the holidays circa 1960 (and maybe again in 1980) without some good, old-fashioned tinsel. If you don’t want a big “Merry Christmas” message displayed in your house, go for these tinsel trees instead.

Best Choice Products Ceramic Christmas Tree
$114$71

My partner, who did not grow up with many holiday decorations, was genuinely puzzled one year when I broke out one of these bad boys: “Why do we need a tree that sits on our coffee table?” The correct question is “Why don’t we?” Vintage ceramic Christmas trees were popular in the 1960s and '70s, and in recent years have made a major comeback on mantels and various other surfaces in the home.

Googly & Bright Ornament Advent Calendar
$25

There is something truly satisfying about an Advent calendar that comes with something both quirky and useful in it. An ornament every day? With googly eyes? Leave 12 spaces on that tree; we’re getting silly this year.

$25 at Urban Outfitters
Felted Menorah
$39

The word "kitschy" should be followed directly by the word “felt.” This interactive, crafty menorah is just right for a household like mine. We are what David Rose would call “a delightful half-and-half situation.” We need Hanukkah decor just as much as we do ceramic Christmas trees and rainbow-colored lights. Pair this menorah with this felt dreidel garland, obviously.

Wondershop Christmas Lit Tinsel Centerpiece

You can’t have a holiday dinner party without a truly garish centerpiece on the table. This one has it all: tinsel flowers, greenery, ball ornaments, a pink deer with matching candles … sounds like you’re set.

'Twas The Night Before Christmas Match Box, 125-Count
$17

Lighting candles or the fireplace with real matches just feels classy. Plus, the box is so beautiful that it’s begging to stick around with the rest of your decor year after year (just fill it back up!).

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation House Decal Stoneware Mug
$15

There’s something about how very 1989 National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is that keeps me coming back every year. That and the urge to play out this exchange: “Why is the carpet all wet, Todd?” “I don’t know, Margo!” Is it still cool to say IYKYK? Well, IYKYK.

$15 at Pottery Barn
St. Jude Skier Wood Coasters, Set of 4
$35

When the skis are long and no one is wearing a helmet, you know it’s a callback to earlier days. Get cozy with this coaster set — especially if you like the “après” part of the day more than the “ski” part.

$35 at West Elm
Threshold Ceramic LED House
$10$7

If you think I’m suggesting you purchase an entire ceramic house village, I very much am. You can take it slow and start with the tree and this one house, but you will definitely be coming back for more next year.

$7 at Target
Noble Gems Glass New Hanukkah Menorah Ornament
$28

The sheer gaudiness of this ornament somehow makes it fit right in with everything else on this list. You don’t have to have a tree to display this literal gem in all its glory — a glass ornament is simply always in style.

$28 at Urban Outfitters
Holiday Ceramic Mug Collection
$118

Who doesn’t want to sip their cocoa out of a cheeky reindeer head? Okay, that sounds kind of Yellowjackets-esque, but when you look at these little guys you’ll get it.

$118 at Pottery Barn
The Holiday Aisle LED Snowman TV Water Globe
$140$115

Frosty inside a vintage TV set lit up with rainbow lights and glitter? Sign me up. It plays classic holiday tunes like “Jingle Bells” and “Deck the Halls,” and makes a great focal point for any kitchen, kiddo’s room, or, maybe even most appropriately, your living room. It has an on/off switch and timer, and it only weighs one pound, so it’s not a hassle like your actual TV. With this decoration, camp has entered the holiday chat.

$115 at Wayfair
Nostalgic Christmas Icon Stoneware Appetizer Plates, Mixed Set of 4
$50

I used to judge the people (my mom) who would get out special holiday dishware only to be used for one meal once a year, but now I get the allure. These are the perfect companions for the contents of your annual charcuterie board. After that, see ya next year!

$50 at Pottery Barn
Holiday Village Glasses, Set of 4
$59

If you don’t think you need a cocktail glass with a wintry holiday scene on it, well, you’re just wrong. Those way-too-strong cranberry-vodka concoctions need a beautiful home, after all.

$59 at Mark & Graham
The Holiday Aisle Vintage Vegas Santa Sign
$195$114

Choosing outdoor holiday decor that isn’t completely corny is a tough challenge. But this sign looks like it walked right out of a vintage store owned by someone with a lot of whimsy and an excellent sense of style. Santa stop here … for dirty martinis. Am I right?
