Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, spans just 1 square mile, but the vacation beach town has a history of attracting some big-name visitors. Its proximity to Washington, D.C. means the area often sees a politician or five, including former President Joe Biden, who has owned a house in the beach town for some time now. Here’s the lowdown on the Biden Rehoboth home, from the architectural style to just how much it cost.

When did Biden buy the Rehoboth property?

Per the Cape Gazette, the Bidens purchased their Rehoboth home in the summer of 2017, since the family had been wanting a place near the beach. It’s unsurprising that they chose Rehoboth Beach specifically —  Washingtonian magazine notes that the Bidens have been visiting the town for “decades.”

Former President Biden’s life has obviously changed a lot since buying that Rehoboth home. In 2017, he was fresh off two terms as vice president, so it makes sense he’d want to invest in something that would help him and his family relax.

During his presidency, Joe and Jill Biden still made plenty of visits to the area, spending their time at local businesses, like Italian red-sauce joints and ice cream shops. Nearby Browseabout Books, which hosted the former president and his wife for book-signing events, even sold Biden-themed merch.

How much is Biden’s Rehoboth property worth?

Biden purchased the 4,786 square-foot house for $2.7 million in 2017. That may sound like a hefty sum for the average American, but another politician who lives in the area paid nearly double for his home.

John Delaney, a former Maryland congressman who ran for president the same year Biden bought his Rehoboth beach house, has a house less than a mile from Biden’s. That property, which Delaney bought in 2010, cost $4.4 million and is located right by a private beach club.

Those looking to own in the area now will need even deeper pockets. In January 2025, Newsweek reported that the value of both of Biden’s properties (he owns a home in Greenville, a suburb of Wilmington, Delaware, as well) had nearly doubled. His Rehoboth home is worth about $6.1 million, the publication estimates.

What style of home is Biden’s beach house?

The Bidens’ beach house in Southern Delaware is described in Air Mail as a “three-story Cape Cod–style mini-mansion.” In fact, this not-too-big, not-too-small, style of house is a defining factor of what’s known as the Cape Cod style.

Cape Cod-style homes are known for their instant curb appeal, being the perfect size for smaller families, and for their winterized roofs — ideal for Cape Cod locals. Biden’s home is obviously larger than the typical Cape Cod-style home (and not in New England), which is known for its small footprint and for the second floor being more like a half-floor or lofted floor. Biden’s home, by comparison, is three floors.

Window placement is another important component of the Cape Cod style. A “three-quarter Cape,” for instance, has three windows by the front door (one on one side, two on the other), while a “full Cape” has two on each side. Biden’s Cape-style home appears to be the latter variety.

Biden’s Rehoboth home has many amenities

Based on the pictures, Biden’s home isn’t vast or extravagant, but rather something you might drive by in a wealthy part of town. A 2020 article from Washingtonian notes it’s “in a cul de sac about a block from the beach.”

Something that does set it apart from other beach houses is that it has an elevator, plus an outdoor kitchen and dining area and not one, but four fireplaces (one outdoor, three indoor).

Plus, with six bedrooms and nearly as many bathrooms, it’s certainly not small. Still, it’s relatively modest compared with what you might expect from someone who’s been a big name in politics for so long. Better Homes and Gardens even called it “a very typical American home.”

It’s designed with climate in mind

According to CNN, Delaware has particularly low elevation, and the houses there tend to be structured in a way that helps avoid any potential flooding. The ground floor of the Biden beach home is the garage, and a large white centrally located staircase leads up to the front door.

The staircase is eye-catching, but this style also provides 10 feet of elevation, which may come in handy in the future — a climate research group’s analysis found that there’s a very high likelihood the property will experience flooding in the next five years. (A 5-foot elevation is generally recommended for homes in areas that may flood.)

Do the Bidens still own their Rehoboth beach house?

Yes. As of January 2025, there has been no indication that the Bidens have sold or plan to sell their Rehoboth, Delaware, home, though they’d likely get a pretty penny for it if they did.
