Before and After: A $400 Revamp Turns a Bland Powder Room into a Chic Little Oasis

It’s no surprise that builder-grade, functional bathrooms often lack personality. But luckily, there are tons of stylish solutions and budget upgrades to help breathe new life into those blah bathrooms.

DIYer Momina Zahid found herself with a particularly bland, outdated powder room begging for a face-lift.

Between the chrome-finished faucet, neutral tile, dated light fixture, plain vanity, and boring hardware, the bathroom needed some style.

The solution to spice things up was to install a faux cement wall and mix elements. Momina got to work on creating the accent wall first by using feather finish underlayment. To upgrade the vanity and window, Momina’s solution was black spray paint.

To work in more black accents, Momina added in a new light fixture, mirror, and towel bar.

Last up, Momina threw in a trellis with draped faux greenery to add some warmth. But it also serves a functional purpose: It hides the eyesore of an overhanging duct.

“The combination of different materials in there like wood, greenery, and cement make it look very organic,” Momina says.

The entire face-lift cost just over $400. Her secret to staying on budget? Sourcing items from Facebook Marketplace and Amazon warehouse deals. The final result provides a serene oasis.

“It’s moody yet very airy and refreshing,” Momina says. “I’m happy to have a retreat in my house, especially during times when travel seems like a distant reality.”
