For Valentine’s Day, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, did the most romantic thing a couple could do during the ongoing quarantine: Reynolds helped Lively dye her roots. Donning gloves and expertly using a dye brush and a mixing bowl, Reynolds mastered the root touch-up, which was just as (if not more) impressive than the design choice the couple made when tiling their bathroom.

“That time I f*d my hairdresser,” Lively hilariously captioned her Instagram video in which you can see Lively and Reynolds’ bathroom wall tiles were continued onto the ceiling, and even frame the recessed skylight.

The tile used in their bathroom is the perfectly imperfect zellige tile. Each tile is hand-cut and uniquely glazed to create the look of antique, uneven tiled surfaces. Because the tiles are not entirely uniform in depth and shape, they catch the light and create a glimmering sequin effect.

When installed on the ceiling, as is the case for Lively and Reynolds’ bathroom — and especially when placed near a skylight or window — the tiles reflect the light and brighten up the space. This technique also draws the eye upwards, thus making the room look bigger and more open.

Of course, the shinier the glaze, the more reflective and glittery the room.

If you’re going to try the ceiling tile technique yourself, you might want to get a professional involved. Otherwise, gravity could become your worst enemy and gift you a pile of broken tiles. But hey, if you’re brave enough and have some tiling experience under your belt, this could be an interesting pandemic project to attempt.
