A few months ago, my mom and I embarked on the process of turning my childhood bedroom into a joint workspace and guest room. And it was about time: I’ve been out of the house for nearly 15 years at this point, and my tiny twin bed and blue velvet butterfly chair (yes, seriously!) had seen better days.

Currently, my mom uses my room as a place to take Zoom calls and read while my dad goes about his own work day downstairs, so the goal was to design a space equal parts peaceful and practical. First things first, we switched out my childhood twin bed for a queen, which will make it way easier to host more than one guest in the space — not to mention, when I visit, I now have a little more room to spread out!

We then said goodbye to my IKEA BILLY bookcase, which my parents had shockingly purchased before I was born, and introduced a chic navy blue shelving unit from HomeGoods, which I then styled with favorite books and trinkets. We kept my decades-old IKEA desk in place but introduced a fun faux bamboo chair I had from a previous apartment. Already, the room was looking much more sophisticated. But there was still that blue butterfly chair in the corner, which just wasn’t comfortable for my 60-something mom to sit on, so off to Goodwill it went. In order to make the room feel cozy and more contemporary, we decided to work some bouclé into the mix. In came this gorgeous accent chair and stool set from Castlery which neither my mom nor I could love more.

The chair swivels, making it easy to enjoy the view out of the bedroom’s expansive windows, and the little stool is perfect to use as either a footrest or a side table. But most of all, this seating solution is so comfortable. I love to sit in the chair whenever I’m home visiting my parents and need to do a bit of computer work; it beats typing away at a standard desk, in my opinion, and makes me feel like I’m lounging at a chic coffee shop.

Given that bouclé pieces can cost a pretty penny, this chair and stool set is also an excellent buy, price-wise. For about $750, you get two separate, substantial items that can be used together, as we’re doing right now, or used apart in different rooms one day if desired. The set also ships within just a couple of weeks, which is not much lead time at all, given the fact that many large retailers are still struggling with major shipping delays. These pieces fill our large bedroom corner perfectly, but if my parents choose to downsize in the coming years, I could see them incorporating these furnishings into a living room or family room in a condo. This set just keeps on giving, and I couldn’t recommend it more.
