Built-in furniture and storage—particularly when done beautifully—can maximize a home’s available space like nothing else can. And the built-ins found in this house are great inspiration, all crafted by Ali Alamolhoda of Alamo Finishing. The homeowner, Kevin Morin, shares info about the house and its gorgeous built-in designs:

“Our house is perched up on the top of a rock, with views looking down to a wetland, valley, and tree hills around. Originally built in 1950, the street was previously named Hollywood Road, as the native Garry Oak trees and sunny outlook was reminiscent of California.

We added a second story to the house in 2017 to take advantage of the views, and to update the living spaces (more bathrooms, bigger master bedroom, roof deck!). Our family is me (Kevin) and my partner David, and our 1-year-old Golden Retriever puppy Nigel (she’s a girl). We are active gardeners and this house came with mature plantings and a lot of trees, so our weekends are spent mostly outside… and we spend way too much time at nurseries.”

Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: West Coast modern

What is your favorite room and why? Master bathroom… I salvaged an Art Deco-style bathtub from a house that was being demolished. This free tub became the inspiration for the whole room. After two years of living through our renovation planning and construction, it’s nice to unwind under a rain shower or in the famous tub. (We recruited four friends to help carry the cast iron tub upstairs.)

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? We just got back from a trip to Japan, and came home with a couple of souvenirs: Hayao Miyazaki Style Pillow and a super high pressure showerhead!

Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? We’ve got so many nooks and built-in seating that anyone who is known for reading would fit in very well.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Get a lot of advice from people who know you best, ignore half of it, and take some of it into your design… and remember to tell them about how they influenced you later on.
