Buy This Haunted Scottish Castle for Under $300K
As Blair Waldorf said in Gossip Girl, “We make our own fairytales.” And this diminutive Glaswegian castle is an affordable dream come true for the right prince, princess…or pauper on the rise.
With a 360-degree view of the Scottish kingdom of downtown Glasgow’s City Centre from the top of its 50-foot turret, this Gothic 3-bedroom, 1-bath home called Balgray Tower Castle is currently on the market for just £220,000 — about $291,000 at today’s exchange rate, not too far off from the current median US home price of $258,300 but a lot more magical than any starter home.
According to the UK listing agent Purple Bricks, the 1830 stone villa nee fortress of fairytales is situated in the middle of a more modest, plebeian neighborhood just off Springburn Park, in Glasgow’s West End, but features all the character and charm of a dainty Downton Abbey — starting with that “castellated turret,” accessible via a spiral staircase from the main two-level home, and mature private gardens. Plus a “garden room” just off the kitchen where you can lounge languidly reading a Jane Austen novel or take your tea with friends while trading gossip and insults like a real Dowager Countess.
Period details include picture rails, marble hearthed fireplaces, exposed timber, carved wooden roses and other features, French doors, slate tiles, and wood floors throughout — plus a clawfoot tub in the bath. Modern amenities include “ample off-street parking” for your carriages, footmen not required.
Along with the dreams and fairytales, however, comes a darker side — according to local legend, Balgray Tower Castle is haunted by a servant who lived and died there in the 19th century.
