You can set up all kinds of shelves, bins, and boxes in your home, but somehow it always feels like you could use more storage — especially in high-traffic areas like your home’s entryway. I don’t have a ton of room by my front door, and the area can get cluttered and overwhelmed very fast.
A wall-mounted coat rack with hooks is a great organizational tool in this case to hold things like coats, umbrellas, and bags, but I just discovered a smarter, more unexpected way to use one at the bottom of your entryway wall instead: as a shoe holder.
Why a Coat Rack Is Useful at the Bottom of Your Wall
Jeff and Liz Richards of Daily Original Vids often post short Instagram and TikTok videos about tips and tricks for your home, and they recently posted a video showing how you can turn a coat rack into a shoe rack by mounting it low to the ground on the wall next to the front door. The hooks are enough for three little pairs of sneakers, and their placement means you won’t have dirty shoes touching your floors.
The caption reads that it’s the “perfect kid-sized shoe and backpack station,” but that doesn’t mean that it’s only good for kids — I could easily see this being useful in my own space to hang a few pairs of shoes right by my front door, just a little bit higher than where the video shows. Some commenters were skeptical about this hanging shoe storage system, but others saw the practicality. “I think this is great cause no matter where my [grandkids] take off their shoes they’re wet and to hang them up to dry helps a lot,” one Instagram user, anestigramma, wrote.
A Coat Rack to Use as a Shoe Rack
This hack doesn’t require any specific make or model of coat rack; you just need one with hooks that’s the right size for your needs and that you can safely mount to your wall. IKEA’s PS 2026 birch rack with self-retracting hooks in a lovely shade of blue is a charmingly offbeat choice for $34.99, if you want to add a little bit more fun in your space.
Where you mount the rack is also up to you. If you have larger shoes, you may want to mount it a bit higher up on your wall so you have enough room. If you don’t want sneakers showcased in your entryway, you could always mount it to your closet wall, too. And if your kids outgrow it, you could always move the rack and actually use it for coats, keys, dog leashes, or whatever you need to hang.
